Adam Kennedy is a free agent Tuesday, after the Washington Nationals chose a $500,000 buyout over paying the veteran $2 million in 2011, reports Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. The decision could mean the Nationals are planning on using Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa at second base and shortstop in 2011, two players that combined for less than two years of big-league service. Kennedy, who turns 35 in January and hit just .249 with a .327 slugging percentage this past season, joins the likes of Orlando Hudson, Aaron Miles and Akinori Iwamura on the free agent market. The Nationals do have Alberto Gonzalez still under club control for depth, deeming Kennedy expendable in D.C.
