Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post says that the St. Louis Cardinals could have some interest in right-handed starting pitcher Aaron Cook. Cook is owed roughly $14.25 million on his deal. Renck reminds us that the market for starters is really thin, so the former All-Stars demand could increase the Rockies asking price. The Phillies were in on Cook, but thats out the window now that they acquired Roy Oswalt. On Tuesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said the Colorado Rockies want to put Jhoulys Chacin back into the rotation, and so they are quietly shopping starting pitcher Cook. They are telling teams that they would either eat some dollars or take back a contract. The righty doesnt have a no-trade clause in his contract, so the Rockies are free to move him to the highest bidder. Cook, 31, is 4-6 with a 4.78 ERA in 19 starts this season.

Were about two weeks away from the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline and well take a look at the six different divisions and see who are the buyers and sellers: As of this article, four games separate the first place San Diego Padres from the last place San Francisco Giants. The Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers are tied for the Wild Card lead and the Giants are two games out of the Wild Card, so everybody with the Diamondbacks are buyers. Buyers San Diego Padres: Need an outfielder with a good bat. They have been mentioned as suitors for the Houston Astros Lance Berkman (can play left field), free-agent Jermaine Dye, Washington Nationals Josh Willingham and Milwaukee Brewers Corey Hart. Other options for the Padres include Raul Ibanez (Phillies), Jose Bautista (Blue Jays), Austin Kearns (Indians) and David DeJesus (Royals). The Pads could also be looking for starting pitching since many of their young pitchers could be on a strict inning count. San Diego was interested in right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook of the Cleveland Indians earlier this week. Colorado Rockies: They need infield depth especially since starting shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is out with a broken wrist. Players mentioned include Florida Marlins Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla. Baltimore Orioles utility man Ty Wigginton would also be a good fit. These players wont come cheap. The Marlins may be interested in catcher Chris Iannetta, as well as some of the Rockies pitching. Los Angeles Dodgers The Dodgers have been looking for starting pitching front-of-the-rotation type of guy. They wanted Cliff Lee, but that didnt happen. They could be a player for Houston Astros Roy Oswalt. or Arizona Diamondbacks Dan Haren (if they are willing to trade within the division), but the team is limited by the pending divorce of the McCourt family, the owners of the Dodgers. GM Ned Colletti could get creative and involve a third team to take on salary to get one of the stud pitchers. The Dodgers could also use relief pitching. Manager Joe Torre doesnt trust anyone other than Jonathan Broxton, Ronald Belisario and Hong-Chih Kuo, and if they use this formula then theyll be headed for failure. San Francisco Giants The Giants need a bat, but in order to get that elusive theyll need to give up one of their starting pitchers. San Francisco was working on a deal for Corey Hart, but as of now GM Brian Sabean hasnt pulled the trigger. The team will need to give up Jonathan Sanchez or rookie Madison Bumgarner in order to get a bat of any value its hard to get around that. The only way they can get around not trading a pitcher is by going after free-agents Jermaine Dye or Carlos Delgado, but if you were Sabean, would you risk you job on picking up a player who hasnt faced Major League pitching this season? I wouldnt. The team could use another relief pitcher, but they need to work on a bat first and then they can concentrate on another arm. Sellers: Arizona Diamondbacks: Dan Haren is the prize of the Dbacks, but theyll want a boatload of prospects in order to get him. The St. Louis Cardinals or the Philadelphia Phillies would love to have him, but with the instability of the Dbacks GM position, the team may not want to make move their biggest named player unless they are overwhelmed with an offer. The Diamondbacks also have relief pitcher Chad Qualls available. The 31-year-old is 1-4 with 12 saves and a 8.60 ERA. He has a WHIP of 2.110, but he does have 9.2 SO/9 ratio.
