Magnolia Acquires ’2 Days In New York:’ Sundance (Deadline Hollywood)
Park City, UT – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today they have acquired North American rights to 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK, a delightful and sophisticated follow-up to her 2007 hit, 2 Days in Paris. 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK stars Delpy, Chris Rock, Delpy’s real life father Albert Delpy, and was produced by Christophe Mazodier. A witty comedy about relationships, art, and clashing cultures, 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK picks up again with Marion (Delpy), now living in New York City with her attentive boyfriend Mingus (Rock), each with a child from a previous relationship. Their idyllic lifestyle is turned upside-down when Marion’s eccentric father comes to stay for a few days, along with Marion’s oversexed sister (Alexia Landeau) and her sleazy boyfriend (Alex Nahon)—and proceed to drive Mingus absolutely crazy. Magnolia will release the film through its Ultra VOD program later this year, with a robust theatrical release in major markets.

SE Cupp and Matt Lewis Defend Racist Remarks From Gingrich and Santorum (crooksandliars)
Click here to view this media This is how ridiculously low the Republican party has sunk. Or the mainstream media. Or both. This is a panel discussion about the different candidates in Iowa that took place this morning on MSNBC. It began with Alex Wagner asking whether Iowa campaigns would cause trouble for whoever the nominee is when the general election rolls around. Nearly out of the gate, this panel goes off the rails, thanks to SE Cupp. First Alex Wagner quotes this line from a December 27th New York Times anti- Ron Paul editorial: > Ron Paul long ago disqualified himself for the presidency by peddling claptrap proposals like abolishing the Federal Reserve, returning to the gold standard, cutting a third of the federal budget and all foreign aid and opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. To which SE Cupp chirps in with her opinion that "most of that is actually good stuff!" It goes downhill from there, and fast, especially when Jimmy Williams states that he finds it fascinating when white people tell black people (or women) what to think. He is referring particularly to this Rick Santorum comment made yesterday: Answering a question about foreign influence ...
Sports in brief (St. Petersburg Times)
**Times wires** Sunday, January 29, 2012 **Figure skating** **Wagner earns U.S. championship** SAN JOSE, Calif. -- **Ashley Wagner** rallied to win her first U.S. women's title on Saturday. Third after the short program, she did enough in her long program to win despite missing slightly on a triple salchow and a triple flip. Then she got help. **Agnes Zawadzi**, who won the short program, fell twice and brushed up against the boards on a another jump. And two-time champion **Alissa Czisny** put her hand on the ice after one jump and fell on another. Wagner finished with 187.02 points, 7.02 more than Czisny. Zawadzki was third. **Ice dance:** **Meryl Davis** and **Charlie White** won their fourth consecutive U.S. title. They finished with 191.54 points, beating siblings **Maia** and **Alex Shibutani** by 12.7 points. **Madison Hubbell** and **Zachary Donohu** were third. Davis and White were so dominant, their free dance score, 114.65 points, was higher than three couples' total score. **European championship:** Russia's **Evgeni Plushenko** did a quadruple jump on his way to winning his seventh title in Sheffield, England. Compatriot **Artur Gachinski**, the short program winner, was second, 14.96 behind. Italy's **Carolina Kostner**, who led after the short program, won ...

John Heilemann on NOW With Alex Wagner: An Angry Newt Gingrich Could Fight Forever (New York Magazine)
On this afternoon's _NOW With Alex Wagner_, our own John Heilemann prognosticated today's GOP primary in Florida, noting that even if Mitt Romney wins with double-digit results, the media narrative will continue to call it a two-man race. "Unless Newt Gingrich gets beat by 25 or 30 or 50 points, I don't think there's anything that's going to stop him from fighting," Heilemann said. "He is really angry at Mitt Romney ... and he's, you know, a little nuts." Plus, on _Morning Joe_ today, Heilemann explains how a "flawed vessel" such as Gingrich is still fighting strong. MSNBC 'Now' Panel Bemoans How Occupy Movement's 'Moral Argument' Has Been Drowned Out (news busters )
The "moral argument" of the Occupy movement have been unfairly tarnished by violence and as well as frittered away by the group's lack of Tea Party-like political mobilization. That's the consensus of the liberal panelists on today's edition of MSNBC's _Now with Alex Wagner._ The Nation magazine contributor Ari Melber kicked things off by blaming the recent violence and vandalism of the Occupy Oakland demonstrators on the "system" as it were, blaming police for excessive force against the well- meaning masses. "I think this is a movement that is showing what happens when you politically participate in ways that are not sanctioned," Melber groused, noting that some police officers "have been excessive with their force" because "people aren't doing the sanctioned parade or the sanctioned political activity." Apparently going through the proper legal and constitutional channels of securing permits and paying for use of park space is tantamount to censorship to Melber, who complained that "if we saw this footage from another country, we would be shocked, we should be shocked." At that point, a worried Wagner asked "whether there's a concern about the message getting thinned too much" what with that the squatters' movement seeming to have ...

John Heilemann on MSBC: Is Newt’s Campaign Almost Dead? (New York Magazine)
Our own John Heilemann went on _Now With Alex Wagner_ today to talk about last night's debate, and whether that might have been the last debate for Angry Teddy Bear Newt Gingrich. There's not another debate scheduled in the next few weeks, and the Gingrich campaign might not last that long, Heilemann points out. As for Gingrich's performance last night, "He did not have a strategy. He did not have a plan when he came into this debate." Come Again? MSNBC's Wagner Claims Reagan 'Would Be A Democrat' Today (News busters)
Alex Wagner made an eye-popping remark on her MSNBC program on Wednesday, as she hinted that she agreed with former Obama spokesman Bill Burton's assertion that Ronald Reagan would feel out of place in today's GOP. When Burton claimed that "**Reagan wouldn't have a chance in this Republican primary right now**," Wagner stunningly replied, "**I think he'd be a Democrat probably**" [audio available here; **video below the jump**]. The anchor, a former employee of the left-leaning Center for American Progress, also touted a quote from Thomas Mann of The Brookings Institution and Norman Ornstein of AEI, who claim in an upcoming book that the Republican Party has become "**an insurgent outlier- ideologically extreme**...**scornful of compromise**...**and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition**." After reading the quote, Wagner turned to Ryan Lizza of _The New Yorker_, who published the excerpt from Mann and Ornstein in a recent article titled "The Obama Memos: The making of a post-post-partisan Presidency." Lizza channeled an oft-repeated claim by liberals that the GOP has moved far to the right: LIZZA: ...You start looking at how the two parties have separated- how they've become more homogeneous and ideologically distant. And I've always thought ...

John Heilemann on NOW With Alex Wagner: Why Is Rick Perry Still In The Race? (New York Magazine)
Our own John Heilemann joined Alex Wagner's panel today to discuss why Rick Perry has chosen, after much a day of "reassessment," to continue campaigning despite a fifth-place finish at Tuesday's Iowa Caucuses, and how Perry is apparently willing to run? or swim? or powerwalk? all the way to South Carolina. Deadpan, Wagner asks the group: "Why is he still in this race?" "I think there's a lot of chatter in the political world today about the possibility of a deal with the Romney campaign to keep him in," Heilemann said. "At this moment, Perry taking 10 percent of the vote in South Carolina is good for Mitt Romney." Read more posts by Sarah Frank Filed Under: **rick rolling **,politics ,rick perry ,2012
Krugman’s response to Alex (Marginal Revolution)
You'll read it here, see also various (mostly weak) responses in the comments to Alex's original post.  Most of you, including Krugman, are missing Alex's point.  The issue is not that Krugman changed his mind (I've done that plenty, Alex too).  The issue is that Krugman a) regularly demonizes his opponents, including those who hold [...]
John Heilemann on NOW With Alex Wagner: The Last Hours Before Iowa (New York Magazine)
The panelists on _NOW With Alex Wagner_ were making hypothetical ($10,000?) bets today about which candidate will win the Iowa caucuses tonight, asking our own John Heilemann where Newt Gingrich might fall in the results, as even the candidate himself knows he likely won't take the No. 1 spot. "He is bound for fourth and possibly even as low as fifth place here," Heilemann said. "The question really coming out of Iowa, especially if Romney wins, is whether the conservative movement decides to coalesce behind either Newt Gingrich or Rick Perry," which would lead to a two-person race after South Carolina's primary election.
