Iran Analysis: Breaking the Reformists? (Theodoulou)
Michael Theodoulou reports for The National: The banning of two leading reformist political parties is another attempt by the establishment to stifle voices of the beleaguered reformist movement and keep itfragmented, according to analysts. The dissolution of the Islamic Iran Participation Front (IIPF) and the IslamicRevolution Mujaheddin Organisation (IRMO) both of which backed the countrys main opposition leader, Mir Hossein Mousavi, was announced on Monday. It follows an attack this month by vigilantes, backed by plainclothes security men, onthe home of the other main opposition leader, Mehdi Karrubi. Mr Mousavis office was also raided, while security forces kept visitors from his home on several occasions. Both men -- branded leaders of sedition by the regime -- challenged Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in last years presidential elections, which they insist he won by fraud.Judicial and other measures used to pressure the reformists are evidence that the system has no intention of making an opening to them, despite grappling at the same time with a highly public rift in the ruling conservative establishment, Iran experts said.A court ordered the ban at the request of the interior ministry, which oversaw last years presidential election, the judiciarys hard-line spokesman and prosecutor general, Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei, said on Monday. They are not allowed to have any activities. The IIPF, however, denied it had been banned. Ali Shakouri-rad, its spokesman, said the party had received no notification of any such court verdict, which he said could not be enforced because the IIPF must be given a chance to appeal. He told the BBCs Persian television channel: Mr Ejei is either misinformed or he is lying. The verbal announcement of the ban was psychological warfare, an IIPF statement said yesterday.Observers believe the confusion stemmed from legal technicalities: the court process banning the two parties may not have been completed, but the judiciary has made clear neither will be allowed to operate in any circumstances.Thats significant because my information is that at least one conservative, Mohsen Rezaie, had sounded out the supreme leader [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] about bringing reformists into some kind of national unity government, Scott Lucas, an Iran expert at Birmingham University in England, said in an interview. The information was that the supreme leader basically said no opening to them.Mr Rezaie, a former Revolutionary Guards commander, was the only conservative candidate in last years presidential elections. He is an ally of the former president Hashemi Rafsanjani and a bitter opponent of Mr Ahmadinejad. There is also suspicion that the two parties were banned because seven of theirmembers who are serving long prison terms filed a complaint to the judiciary in July that Revolutionary Guard commanders at a Tehran base had actively orchestrated plans to ensure Mr Ahmadinejads re-election.The ban on the two reformist parties, which are closely tied, means they can no longer issue statements legally, further undermining the opposition movements ability to address its followers. The ability of the reformists to operate within the system now rests mainly with individual MPs in the conservative-dominated parliament. Most reformist newspapers have been shuttered since the disputed election last year and scores of journalists jailed.Harsh repression by security forces has kept opposition protesters off the streets since the beginning of the year, although Mr Mousavi and Mr Karrubi have remained defiantly outspoken, despite persistent calls from leading hardliners for them to be arrested and tried for sedition. The regime has ignored such calls, apparently loath to make them martyrs or spark fresh unrest. But members of the two seemingly banned reformist parties were jailed during last years post-election unrest in which thousands of opposition supporters were detained. The IIPFs secretary general, Mohsen Mirdamadi, remains in jail, along with 15 other members of his party, which is viewed as the first modern Iranian political party after the Islamic Revolution in 1979.Apart from blogs and social networking websites, the opposition has few channels to reach its followers. The ban on the two parties came from the judiciary, a bastion of conservative opposition to Mr Ahmadinejad, which is headed by Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani. His brother, Ali Larijani, the parliamentary speaker, is another key rival of the president.Mr Ahmadinejads influential conservative opponents accuse him of economic mismanagement, adventurous foreign policy and, most significantly, of trying to monopolise power in the presidency at the expense of other institutions such as the parliament.Mr Mousavi and Mr Karrubi have levelled similar accusations, but the conservative elite has made clear it has no interest in accommodation with the reformists, despite common antipathy to the president. The conservatives are going to keep them well boxed out, Prof Lucas said.
Senior Iranian's Son Murdered After Attacks on Sensitive Iranian Bases
Shortly after two big explosions rocked Iranian Revolutionary Guards bases near Tehran Saturday, Ahmed Rezaie, 31, was found dead in Dubai's Gloria Hotel. He was the the son of a high-ranking Iranian official, Mohsen Rezaie, secretary of the powerful Expediency Council and former IRGC commander. The cause of his death strongly resembled the method by which Hamas' contact man with Tehran Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was slain in Jan., 2010 in another Dubai hotel. The local authorities laid that death at the door of Israel's Mossad. Rezaie's body showed no signs of violence. He appeared have been injected with the Suxamethonium muscle relaxant and then smothered with a pillow. Ahmad Rezaie left for the United States in 1998 where he openly criticized Iran's rulers, especially Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran Feature: Naming the Officials in the Attacks on Karroubi's House and Qoba Mosque
In the five nights before Qods (Palestine) Day on 3 September, the residential complex of opposition cleric Mehdi Karroubi was surrounded by a pro-regime crowd. Violence escalated until, on the fifth night, a group tried to storm Karroubi's apartment. Several people were injured; Karroubi's bodyguard was reported to have been seriously wounded. On Qods Day, a pro-regime crowd launched an assault on Qoba Mosque in Shiraz, the base of opposition cleric Ayatollah Dastgheib. They entered the mosque, injuring worshippers and forcing the abandonment of services. Iranian authorities have denied the involvement of any Government forces and/or blamed them on "rogue elements". The head of Iran's national police claims 100 people were identified in the Karroubi attacks but no arrests have been made. NowTagheer website, linked to Karroubi, claims that Mohammad Larijani, Governor of Shemiranat country in Tehran Province, was involved in the assault on the Karroubi home. It addsthat Mohammad Larijani was in regularly telephone contact with Morteza Tamaddon, Governor of Tehran, reporting on the attacks from the scene. On the Qoba Mosque front, Arshama3's Blog posts the list from opposition websites of 41 alleged attackers. Of the 41, only Hojatoleslam Voldan has been arrested; he was released on 25 September on bail. 1- Hojatoleslam Alizadeh Supreme Leaders representative in the Fajr Army of Fars Province2 Hojatoleslam Voldan Head of Policy-Making Office for FridayPreachers in Fars Province3 HojatoleslamTajarod Basiji4 Hojatoleslam Azarnia Basiji5 AkbarAram -member of the Basiji base in Abolfzl Adelabad mosque6 Asghar Gharekhani Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)7 Ali Tajik Retired IRGC8 Rasoul Tajarod Basiji9 Akbar Roushanali Retired IRGC10 KazemRousta Responsible for the Martyr Rokni Cultural Center11 Colonel Ouji IRGC12 Kohandel member of the Policy-Making Office for Friday Preachers13 Mohammad Mohammad Pour Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque base14 -Ali Mardani- Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque base15 SiamakKeshavarz Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque base16 AmirMardani Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque base17 MehdiZohd Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque base18 MohammadZohd Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque base20 Abdulhamid Aboudi -Commander fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque resistance base21 Mohammad Javad Aboudi Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque resistance base22 Amanbakhsh Shahriari Basiji fromImam Khamenei Abolfazl Mosque resistance base23 HassanBehrouzi Governors office employee24 -Mehrab Chaghaie Former commander of the Basiji district 3 base25 HosseinZareh Basiji26 Pourmontazeri Commander of the Basiji district 3 base27 HassanJangi Responsibleof the Basiji district4 base28 Amir Mohajedi Basiji of the district8 base29 Saeed Abedimanesh Member of theMesbah Hoda Hosseinyeh30 Mohsen Gholami Member of theMesbah Hoda Hosseinyeh31 Behnam Zare Guard of Fajr Information Division 1932 Abbas Gharekhani-Commander of the Basiji district2 base33 Ali Sadighi Guardfrom Basiji district110 base34 Jafar Taghdiri Responsible for IRGC Verificationin Shiraz35 Mehdi Firouzabadi -Member ofIRGC military training base in Shiraz36 Colonel Abdul Karim Rezai Responsible for Fajr Corps Academy37 Aria Bagheri Bassiji from Khatam ol-AnbiaMosque, Golestan quarter38 Colonel Yari - Commander of Ashura, Imam Husseinbattalion39 ColonelParan Responsible for IRGC physical training corps40 Mehdi Bahmani Son of Sardar Bahmani41 JavadNowroozi Governors office employee
