Merlo Coffee & Chocolate Affair Cacao and caffeine look set to star on Sunday, writes Fiona Donnelly. Talk to staff at Paddington’s tasty chocolate pitstop, Bittersweet, and they’ll tell you how much their arms are aching. They’ve been bending over backwards since last week making batches of hand-made treats for the Merlo Coffee Chocolate Affair at Portside this Sunday. It’s their hugely popular salted caramels that are to blame for the temporary muscle trauma, says owner Melissa Atkinson – they’re real bicep busters. “The longer you mix the caramel, the thicker and thicker it gets!” The caramels are a relatively new addition but Melissa says she’ll also be toting along old favourites to the festival. These include rich couverture chocolate fudge made to Bittersweet founder’s Ann Atkinson’s recipe, and brownies and blondies not available at The Barracks. Melissa and her team aren’t the only foodies with a tough job this week. Sponsor of the event, Merlo, is gearing up to meet the caffeine needs of the 15,000 festival-goers expected to attend. The team will be holding three different 40-minute master classes, with founder Dean Merlo revealing his secrets to creating the perfect cup of coffee, and two other free sessions covering latte art and science of coffee. “Coffee and chocolate both conjure great sensations,” says Dean. “It should be great fun in the beautiful Brisbane sunshine, experiencing the two things people feel strongly about as foodies – chocolate and coffee.”
