Lions Secondary Suspect Heading Into Season Opener
Chad Hutchinson AHN Sports Correspondent
Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) The Detroit Lions are facing major questions heading into their season opener.
The Lions are taking the field with a very potent offense, and improved offensive and defensive lines, but their major concern is in their defensive secondary.
The Lions are entering the opener with only four cornerbacks. The starting cornerbacks for Detroit are Chris Houston and Jonathan Wade, with little known newcomers Aaron Barry and Alphonso Smith as the backups.
Smith arrived in Detroit just a week ago via a trade with Denver, and Barry was signed as an undrafted free agent last spring. Barry played little in the preseason, but impressed coaches enough to warrant a roster spot, as well as being named the starting nickel back.
Detroits safeties are in better shape, but not by much.
Second year star Louis Delmas is slated to start, but has struggled with injuries throughout the offseason. C.C. Brown is set to start opposite Delmas, but has shown little in the preseason to evaluate him at anything else but average.
Undrafted free agent Randy Phillips has shown flashes of greatness during the preseason, but the coaches are still looking for more consistency. Rookie Amari Spievey is still adjusting to his switch from cornerback to safety, but does give the Lions the ability to move him around when necessary.
The Detroit Lions are a greatly improved team; anyone around the league can tell you that.
Sundays game vs. the Bears is a test for the Lions coaching staff to see if it is able to force Chicago to play to theirstrength and their defensive line, and to keep Cutler from cutting up the secondary.
If the Lions can keep consistent pressure on Cutler, it should be more than enough to make up for the Lions unproven secondary.
