Congressman Charlie Melancon, who is running against U.S. Sen. David Vitter in the Nov. 2 election, will be the headline speaker at DemFest'10 on Oct. 16 in Abita Springs.
The annual old-fashioned outdoor political rally, sponsored by the St. Tammany Democratic Parish Executive Committee and Progressive Northshore Democrats, will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. at the gazebo and Trailhead complex.
It will be the second consecutive appearance at the event by Melancon, D-Napoleonville. Melancon appeared at DemFest'09 shortly after announcing he would oppose Vitter, R-Metairie, in this fall's election.
Also speaking will be New Orleans lawyer Caroline Fayard, who finished second in an eight-candidate field for lieutenant governor in last week's election.
In addition to political speeches, the rally will feature music by two bands: Erika Lewis & Tuba Skinny of New Orleans and Amp'd, a nine-piece brass band composed of students from Mandeville and Fontainebleau high schools and Southeastern Louisiana University.
The event is free and open to the public, Gail Ledet, chairwoman of the Democratic executive committee, said in a news release.
There will be free food and beverages, and more than 15 New Orleans-area non-profit organizations will be operating informational booths, according to Joan Simon, head of Progressive Northshore Democrats. She said there will also be a children's activity area.
Fayard, a Democrat making her first run for public office, will meet Republican Secretary of State Jay Dardenne in the Nov. 2 runoff for lieutenant governor.
She received 159,507 votes, or 24 percent, in the Oct. 2 primary and carried 11 parishes in her bid to succeed former Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, who stepped down after being elected mayor of New Orleans.
Other speakers at the event include Democrat Myron Katz of New Orleans, who is opposing 1st District Congressman Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson; and Buddy Leach, chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party.
Early voting starts soon...: Early voting for the Nov. 2 general election starts Oct. 19 and will run for a week.
Voters can cast ballots for congressional, state and local elections at the St. Tammany Parish courthouse in Covington, 701 N. Columbia St., or in the Slidell area at 61134 Military Road at the former St. Tammany Levee Board building.
Both offices are closed on Sundays, and hours Monday through Saturday are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Identification is required. If additional information is needed, call 985.809.5500.
In addition to the congressional races, there will be a runoff for lieutenant governor between Secretary of State Jay Dardenne and New Orleans lawyer Caroline Fayard.Several local elections are also on the ballot:
* A proposed increase in the maintenance and operation tax in the 4th Drainage District near Slidell.
* A runoff for Pearl River police chief between incumbent Benjamin "Bennie" Raynor and Jack Sessions.
* A runoff between Sam Phillips and Ella Brakefield for a seat on the Pearl River Board of Aldermen.
