Brooks Conrad Errors Doom Braves In Crucial Playoff Game
ATLANTA — Brooks Conrad stood near second base, all alone. He didn't dare go near Braves manager Bobby Cox, standing on the mound making a pitching change. Finally, teammate Derrek Lee wandered over, giving Conrad a pat on the back. Nothing helped. All Conrad could do was bend over in anguish. "I wish I could just dig a hole," he said, "and sleep in it." The Braves were within one out of taking control of the NL division series, but a 30-year-old journeyman infielder who wouldn't have been playing if not for season-ending injuries to Chipper Jones and Martin Prado simply couldn't catch the ball Sunday. Conrad made three errors, the last of them on a two-out grounder in the ninth inning that gave the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 victory over Atlanta. "It was completely embarrassing," said Conrad, who has made eight errors in the last seven games going back to the regular season. "Once again, I feel like I let everyone down." He bobbled a grounder in the first, but that one didn't hurt. He dropped a popup the next inning, allowing an unearned run to score. Finally, Buster Posey's hard grounder skidded under Conrad's glove, bringing home the run that capped San Francisco's two-run ninth. "I thought he would make the play," Posey said. "I wouldn't wish that on anybody." Brian Wilson shut down the Braves in the ninth to give the Giants a 2-1 lead in a tense best-of-five series in which all three games have been decided by one run. San Francisco can close it out Monday night. For Conrad, the memories of this one will linger for a lifetime. He tied a postseason record for errors in a game and became the fourth second baseman to make three, according to STATS LLC. Those blunders might just speed up the retirement of Cox, whose long managing career ends as soon as Atlanta's season is done. "We had this one won," Cox said. "We can win games and we can compete against anybody. But we can't afford to make mistakes." Atlanta did nothing against Jonathan Sanchez, managing only two hits in 7 1-3 innings and trailing 1-0. But when pinch-hitter Eric Hinske lined a two-run homer off Sergio Romo in the eighth, the Braves suddenly had the lead. Unfortunately for Atlanta, there was no Billy Wagner to close it out. He was removed from the roster before the game with a pulled muscle on his left side. Rookie reliever Craig Kimbrel was within one out of a save before the Giants rallied. Aubrey Huff tied it with a run-scoring single off Mike Dunn. Then, Posey hit a grounder to just the right man. "I've never experienced that range of emotions on a baseball field," Atlanta outfielder Matt Diaz said. The wild finish overshadowed Sanchez's brilliant performance – he didn't allow a hit until the sixth – and Hinske's dramatic homer, which carried the Braves to within one strike of having a chance to close out the series at Turner Field. The gaffes by Conrad cost them. He was one of the last guys to make the Braves roster out of spring training and spent his first full year in the majors. Conrad was primarily a backup, though he did provide one of the season's most dramatic moments with a pinch-hit grand slam that capped a seven-run ninth inning and a 10-9 victory over Cincinnati in May. Then Jones hurt his knee, and an injury finished off Prado for the season, too. Down the stretch, the Braves were forced to go with Conrad at third base. His defense was so shaky that Cox swapped him with Omar Infante before the crucial last game of the regular season with the Braves trying to wrap up the wild card, moving Conrad to second because he was having trouble making accurate throws from third. His arm wasn't the problem in Game 3. Freddy Sanchez provided a key hit for the Giants, smacking a two-strike single to center to keep them alive in the ninth. Kimbrel was replaced by Dunn, another rookie, who threw a slider that Huff yanked into right field to bring home Travis Ishikawa. Peter Moylan took over for Dunn and got what he's known for: a ground ball from Posey. It went right through Conrad. Sanchez and Atlanta starter Tim Hudson had quite a pitchers' duel. The lone run off Hudson came after Mike Fontenot led off the second with a triple to right. Jason Heyward raced back to the wall and had the ball in his glove, but it popped out when he slammed hard into the padding. Cody Ross followed with a popup into short right. Heyward might have made an attempt on it, but he got a late break and wasn't charging that hard, perhaps still a bit groggy from his collision with the wall. But Conrad, looking back into the setting sun and running hard, got there in time to make the catch – only to have the ball pop out of his glove. Fontenot, who wasn't tagging, raced in with the first run while Conrad fumbled for the ball. Sanchez was nearly as dominant as Tim Lincecum in a two-hit, 14-strikeout performance that carried San Francisco to a 1-0 victory in the series opener. The left-hander baffled the Braves with a slider, striking out 14 and holding them hitless until Hudson, of all people, singled to right in the sixth. Nothing came of that. Then, after Alex Gonzalez started the eighth with a single and Conrad – in yet another blunder – popped up a bunt, Hinske connected. It was in the eighth when Giants manager Bruce Bochy appeared to make another ill-fated call to a bullpen that coughed up a 4-1 lead in Game 2 at San Francisco. The Braves rallied to tie that one, then won it 5-4 on Rick Ankiel's 11th-inning homer into McCovey Cove. This time, it was Hinske who delivered. He fought back from an 0-2 count before hitting a line drive into the right-field corner that sent the standing-room crowd of 53,284 into a frenzy. The next inning, there was nothing but stunned silence except for those who mustered the energy to boo Conrad. Cox is known for defending his players more than perhaps any other manager, but even he might be forced to make a change at second base. The only other middle infielder on the roster is little-used rookie Diory Hernandez. "I'll have to sleep on it," was all Cox would say when asked if Conrad would stay in the lineup. Bochy made no apologies for the way his team pulled it out. "To come back like that after a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, I mean, that can take the wind out of your sails," he said. "And these guys came right back and found a way to get it done. That is a great win." Notes: President Jimmy Carter and former Braves owner Ted Turner attended the game, wearing Atlanta caps. ... Conrad was the first player in franchise history to make three errors in a postseason game. In an interesting twist, the previous player to do it was former Atlanta shortstop Rafael Furcal with the Dodgers in Game 5 of the 2008 NLCS. : Brooks Conrad Errors Doom Braves In Crucial Playoff Game -||- : -||- : TheGoldMan
Handicapper Matt Rivers Giants-Braves Pick Stuns the Pick Nation
Your free pick winner for Thursday comes from Matt Rivers. Its on the Giants minus 1 runs at SportsBook. Matt says: When I say this is a bottom of the barrel comp play I mean this is a bottom of the barrel comp play. To lay a run and a half with the mediocre at the very best San Francisco offense against a decent enough sinkerballer in Derek Lowe is asking a lot. Plus one never fully knows which Tim Lincecum will show up each start. But with that said The Freak is still a top-notch hurler and better than Lowe, even if not completely on his game. I would say that these offenses overall are fairly similar in that neither is all that good. Losing Chipper, Prado and a few others has hurt Bobby Cox club and right now besides young Jason Heyward and Brian McCann the Bravos dont have too many threats. Omar Infante has had a nice little season but he is still Omar Infante and therefore I dont see the boys from the Atl exactly getting off with the bats. Buster Posey is a total stud and with a few others by the Bay and the potential of Lincecum in a small play I will back the G-Men. If the two time Cy Young award winner brings his A-game then this is a total bargain. Im not all that sure that will happen sothis isa small play. But the Bravos have not been very good away from Turner Field all season long and with the way they come limping into this thing Ill back that Freak. The pick: San Francisco -1.5. For more information: Matt Rivers has a very solid 2-1 day on Wednesday with the 300,000* Phillies minus 1 runs plus a little along with the 200,000* Yankees. I certainly didnt predict the Halladay no-no but Ill take it for sure. 400,000* of profit yesterday and the run is up to right around 3.5 million* of profit in a tad less than the last month. Two more rock solid locks today and note your times as the game from the Trop goes early. 300,000* Texas-Tampa Bay plus a 200,000* Nebraska-Kansas State. 2-0 sweep?Another 300,000* winner leads the way. Maybe another 300,000* no-hitter? Probably not but a winner nonetheless. Braves Bats Drop Game 1
Yes, Buster Posey was out at second and the only run in the Braves 1-0 Game 1 loss shouldnt have counted. But Im not complaining about it for two reasons; 1. Its the human element of baseball and you can argue it is simply a part of the game 2. Tim Lincecum is one of 2 right-handers in the game who I can accept a loss from. The other? Roy Halladay. Its not that the Braves shouldnt ever lose to any other right hander. Can a guy like Josh Johnson, Adam Wainwright, or even Mike Pelfrey ever bring their A-stuff and defeat Atlanta? Of course. But I never feel like these guys can shut down the Braves lineup the way the two aforementioned aces can. Lincecum trapped the Braves hitters somewhere between wonderment and shaking-legged caution. I was glad to see Zito not on the Giants postseason roster as lefties dominate the Atlanta lineup that includes left-handed hitters Jason Heyward and Brian McCann. Hell, Oliver Perez has looked brilliant against this team. But the fact is, the Braves caught Tim Lincecum, one of the best pitchers of the past decade, on a night when he was dealing. What can you do? The series will be decided when they face righties Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez. The Braves are without Chipper Jones and Martin Prado. Everyone knows that already. But if the rest of the lineup fails to expose the errors these two pitchers will undoubtedly make (great pitchers, but not Lincecum-level) then the Giants deserve the series and the Braves just simply didnt have it. Atlanta has one more game in San Francisco before returning home where they had the best home record in baseball. Upon arriving back in the comfortable confines of the Ted, they will run out staff ace Tim Hudson. Boom, goes the dynamite. Hudson has been fantastic this season with 17 wins and a 2.83 ERA that sparkles more than Cody Rosss bald head. And if you read the first sentence of my post, the Giants technically failed to score just like the Braves so its not as though Atlanta is facing Muderers Row. Tonight, Tommy Hanson will take the mound against Matt Cain, despite Hanson fouling a ball off his face during Thursdays batting practice. With everything the Braves have been through with Jones, Prado, Jurrjens, OFlaherty, etc. it would make sense if Hanson was unable to pitch. Hanson faced the Giants once this season giving up a single earned run over seven innings while striking out 3. Jonny Venters recorded five outs last night so I wouldnt expect to see him in the game tonight IF Bobby Cox wasnt in the dugout. But as long as Cox is manning the helm, Venters is available no matter what. Venters made 79 appearances this season as a rookie. Venters wasnt just a workhouse though, he was also the Braves most reliable setup man. The rookie lefty had a 1.95 ERA and 93 strikeouts over 83 innings for an ERA+ of 201. In game 1, the pitching wasnt the problem. They more than held up their end of the bargain and I trust Hanson, Venters, and the rest of the gang will again. I just hope the bats will show up.
Lincecum Strikes Out 14 As San Francisco Giants Win Game 1
SAN FRANCISCO — The sellout crowd that had been waiting seven years for another playoff game roared when Tim Lincecum jogged back out to the mound to start the ninth inning. The way the Freak dominated in his postseason debut, there was no way manager Bruce Bochy would take the ball away. Lincecum pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 in a dazzling performance, and the San Francisco Giants scored their only run after a questionable umpiring call to beat the Atlanta Braves 1-0 in Game 1 of their NL division series Thursday night. "That's one of the best efforts I've ever seen," Bochy said. "What a great job that kid did. He's tough. If he's on and he has all his pitches working, he's going to be tough." That he was. The two-time NL Cy Young winner pitched a gem, a day after Philadelphia's Roy Halladay threw only the second no-hitter in postseason history in his first playoff game. Lincecum outdueled playoff veteran Derek Lowe and caught a break, too. Cody Ross singled in the only run Lincecum needed in the fourth after Buster Posey was called safe by umpire Paul Emmel on a steal of second. "I guess it's a good thing we don't have instant replay right now," Posey said. "It was a beautiful slide, wasn't it?" It was the first career steal for Posey, even though he appeared to be tagged out by Brooks Conrad on the play – retiring Braves manager Bobby Cox, the all-time leader in ejections, did not argue. "I haven't seen it," Cox said. "Some of the guys came down after that inning and said he was out by six, eight inches. From the dugout you can't see anything." Said Emmel: "I saw him safe. That's what I called." Lincecum struck out Derrek Lee for the third time to end the 119-pitch masterpiece in 2 hours, 26 minutes. He became just the 12th pitcher with 14 or more strikeouts in a postseason game. "As far as shutouts go, I think that was up there with my better ones," said Lincecum, who pitched on seven days' rest. "I was pretty anxious to get out there a couple days ago. You just have to deal with those extra days." While it used to be slugger Barry Bonds as the face of the franchise, now it's the skinny, shaggy-haired Lincecum. This is the quirky pitcher with the unorthodox delivery who doesn't ice his arm, munches on treats like Philly cheesesteaks or ice cream before starts and is trailed around the clubhouse by his friendly French bulldog, Cy – named for Cy Young. In a postseason already filled with plenty of stellar pitching, this was the first 1-0 game in the postseason since 2005, when the Chicago White Sox finished off a World Series sweep over Houston. Game 2 of the best-of-five series is Friday night, with 13-game winner Matt Cain going for the Giants against Tommy Hanson. Lincecum's only other complete game this season came in a six-hit shutout of the New York Mets on July 15. He threw all his pitches effectively, from his off-speed stuff that darted down into the dirt to his power fastball that he blew past hitters high in the zone. Lincecum carried the momentum from a strong final month right into October. His strikeouts set a franchise record for a postseason game – his eighth time with 10 or more Ks this year and 27th of his career. "He was lights out," Cox said. "We had two runners at second base all night and that's it." Lowe, who won his last five regular-season starts with a 1.17 ERA over that stretch, allowed one run on four hits in 5 1-3 innings, struck out six and walked four. Lincecum, still hitting 91 mph on the radar gun in the ninth, became the first pitcher to record 12 strikeouts or more in the playoffs since Roger Clemens had 15 for the New York Yankees against Seattle in the 2000 AL championship series. Lowe was done after giving up Posey's double and a walk in the sixth. That delighted the orange towel-waving crowd of 43,936 at AT&T Park – the largest for a postseason game in the ballpark's 11-year history. Making his playoff debut at age 26 and in his third full major league season, Lincecum looked every bit an ace. He was sharp throughout, walking only one, and in no way resembled the pictcher whose career-worst five-start losing streak began with a defeat Aug. 5 at Atlanta. "He struggled so much in August," first baseman Aubrey Huff said. "To be able to do what he's done is a testament to the kid. It was the first time he's really struggled and he came back and manned up." Lincecum has returned to his Cy Young form after that rare rough patch. He has a 1.60 ERA since Sept. 1, going 6-1 with 66 strikeouts. "At the time guys were telling me you're going to go through your struggles," Lincecum said. "It almost kind of feels it was that far back there, I try not to go back there and think about that mental slide." : Lincecum Strikes Out 14 As San Francisco Giants Win Game 1 -||- : -||- : TheGoldMan
Experiment With a Deep-Toned Cream Blush For Fall
Ive never been big into blushes, especially deep colors designed to give you that flattering wind-swept flush, but since taking baby steps with luminizers and bronzers this past summer, I think Im ready to dip my brushes into some richer, fall-festive hues for the season ahead! However, Im a little wary about the heavy, overly-powdered look, especially with risky, deeper colors that have a bigger tendency to appear streaky, sink into pores or crease throughout the day. Thats why cream blushes are my go-to experimentation product for fall the lightweight creamy formula is perfect for the dryer, cooler months ahead when the last thing your parched skin needs is more powder, plus the sheer color allows you to take the plunge and experiment with bolder shades, no matter what your skin color, that you can build gently upon application without looking caked on. Go for a pretty pinky-mauve for your staple fall color, like MACs Blushcreme in Posey, or experiment with a deeper version of the hue, like Nars Cream Blush in Montenegro. If youre ready to dive right into fall, try a lush rosy-mocha color like Bobbi Browns Pot Rouge in Chocolate Cherry, or Paula Dorf Color Cream in Candy Apple, which looks intimidating in the pan but gorgeous on the cheeks! -Alex Gambardella Save on Deep-Toned Cream Blush at Nordstrom from TheFinds coupon site.
