"I'm really embarrassed".  Texting and walking is hard enough, so why risk it on a huge pier over Lake Michigan? On Monday night, a quiet stroll turned into a major emergency when a local woman, Bonnie Miller, distracted by texting, walked right off the edge of the pier.

I'm pleased to share September's "Peer to Pier" interview, with Bonnie Gisel, a John Muir scholar and author of three books on his life. Bonnie is also curator of the LeConte Memorial Lodge in Yosemite National Park. Bonnie touched on many themes, one of many being the sense of awe and inter-connectedness that Nature inspires. Stage, TV and film director Arthur Penn -- whose 1967 classic film "Bonnie and Clyde" has been credited with transforming film history -- died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his home in New York City, one day after his 88th birthday. Penn was known for directing William Gibson's "The Miracle Worker" on TV on the stage and on film and coached then-Senator John F. Kennedy during his pivotal TV debates with Richard M. Nixon in 1960, telling JFK to look directly into the camera lens and keep his responses short and sweet. "But it was as a film director that Mr. Penn left his mark on American culture, most indelibly with 'Bonnie and Clyde,'" asserts the New York Times. "Many of the now-classic films of what was branded the 'New American Cinema' of the 1970s -- including 'Taxi Driver,' directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Mr. Schrader, and 'The Godfather,' directed by Francis Ford Coppola -- would have been unthinkable without 'Bonnie and Clyde' to point the way."
