1990s Chart Toppers Turned Reality Stars
Filed under: Black Music Month Navigating the music business is a tricky task. In addition to the ongoing difficulty of making a hit song, many of the biggest chart toppers have a tough time navigating their personal lives. The trials and tribulations of these celebrity notables certainly make for dynamic storylines, and their lives are great fodder for the reality TV circuit. Here, Black Voices takes a look at some of music's most recognizable artists from the 1990s and their newest realities (pun intended). http://xml.channel.aol.com/xmlpublisher/fetch.v2.xml?option=expand_relative_urls&dataUrlNodes=uiConfig,feedConfig,localizationConfig,entry&id=898846&pid=898845&uts=1277365326 http://www.aolcdn.com/ke/media_gallery/v1/ke_media_gallery_wrapper.swf 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Navigating the music business is a tricky task. Black Voices takes a look at some of black music's most notable artists from the 1990s and how they became reality television stars. Various Getty Images North America 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Lil' Kim Since getting her start as the sole female in the Brooklyn rap group Junior Mafia, Kimberly "Lil Kim" Jones has never been afraid to be her boisterous self. From posing, legs open, on the cover of her 1996 debut album 'Hard Core' to rocking flashy ensembles in 'Crush on You,' the pint-size Brooklyn native always stood out in the rap game. In 2005, she was sentenced to serve a year-long prison bid for lying to a jury about her friends' involvement in a shooting outside a New York radio station. The 34-year-old Grammy winner chose to turn her prison plight into a top-rated BET reality series, 'Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown.' In 2009, she upped her game as a contestant on the popular TV competition 'Dancing With the Stars.' 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars DMX DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, hasn't had an easy life. The Ruff Ryders MC was, at one point, homeless and has long suffered from drug addiction. But at his prime, he was one of the '90s biggest rap stars. The Yonkers, N.Y., native had five consecutive albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Albums chart, and he starred in films like 'Belly' and 'Romeo Must Die.' But he hasn't been able to stay out of trouble with the law in recent years. He highlighted his personal crises in 2006 in the short-lived BET reality series 'Soul of a Man.' 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Mel b Melanie Brown was the wild child of the '90s British mega-group The Spice Girls. Known as Scary Spice, she stood out not only for her big hair and in-your-face attitude, but also for her strong presence on songs like 'Wannabe.' Mel B, who has a child with Eddie Murphy, made it to the finals of the fifth season of 'Dancing With the Stars' and came in second place. 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars MC Hammer By 1990, Oakland, Calif.-native MC Hammer was known for his signature "Hammer" balloon pants, dance moves and, of course, catchy tunes like 'U Can't Touch This.' But money mismanagement forced him to sell the $12 million dream house he purchased, and in 2003, VH1 snatched up the rapper to appear on the first season of its 'Surreal Life' reality show, which put several has-been celebrities in one house to live together. 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Angie Stone Widely known as "The Godmother of Neo-Soul," the acclaimed songwriter and vocalist released her critically acclaimed solo album, 'Black Diamonds,' in 1999. Nearly 20 years after making her music debut as part of the first female rap group (Sequence), the Columbia, S.C., native had a hit on her hands with the ballad 'No More Rain (In This Cloud)' from the Clive Davis-backed opus. In the new millennium, D'Angelo's baby's mama appeared on VH1's widely popular weight loss competition 'Celebrity Fit Club.' 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Flavor Flav William Drayton Jr. , better known as Flavor Flav, is a founding member and hype man of the seminal rap group Public Enemy. The New Yorker has been known for wearing large clocks as medallions around his neck and for his signature "Yeah Boyee" catch phrase. VH1 chose the rapper to participate in the third installment of its 'Surreal Life' series, and an unlikely love connection with Brigitte Nielsen led to a show for the couple called 'Stange Love.' After Nielsen turned down a relationship with Flav, he looked for love on three seasons of his own show, 'Flavor of Love.' 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Brandy After making a splash with songs like 'Baby' and 'I Wanna Be Down' from her self-titled debut, Brandy made her mark in the '90s as one of R&B music's top artists. The 31-year-old Grammy Award winner starred in her own sitcom, 'Moesha,' for six seasons before making headlines for her dehydration problems, faux marriage, pregnancy and involvement in a 2006 car accident that claimed the life of a woman. In 2010, the former 'America's Got Talent' judge co-starred with brother Ray J on the VH1 reality series 'Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business,' which has been picked up for a second season. 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas made a name for herself as one-third of one of the most successful girl groups of all time, TLC. The Atlanta trio wasn't afraid to sing and rap about safe sex, shady friends and no good men, and their openness led to a string of chart toppers such as 'No Scrubs,' 'Waterfalls' and 'Red Light Special.' After the untimely death of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, Chilli and T-Boz decided not replace their group member. Chilli, who has a son with producer Dallas Austin, subsequently made headlines for her relationship with pop star Usher, but the two broke up. Her 2010 VH1 reality show 'What Chilli Wants' documents her on-going search to find a mate. 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Da Brat Winning a competition on 'Yo MTV Raps' gave Da Brat a chance to meet So So Def Recordings head Jermaine Dupri. He signed her to his record label, and her 1994 debut, 'Funkdafied,' made her the first female rap artist to go platinum. The Chicago native, who is also the half sister of actress LisaRaye, mostly appeared on tracks for artists like Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott and Destiny's Child. In 2007, she made an appearance on 'Celebrity Fit Club' and lost close to 30 pounds. 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Kandi Burruss In the early '90s, Kandi Burruss was the lead singer for Xscape, the first R&B group signed to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def Recordings. In 2000, the Atlanta native became the first black woman to win an ASCAP award for songwriter of the year after penning Destiny Child's 'Bills, Bills, Bills' and TLC's 'No Scrubs.' Yet, her solo debut, 'Hey Kandi,' failed to perform commercially. More recently, she has appeared on the hit Bravo reality series 'The Real Housewives of Atlanta' and wrote her cast mate Kim Zolciak's infectious dance track 'Tardy for the Party.' 90s Charttoppers Turned Reality Stars Permalink|Email this|LinkingBlogs|Comments
