Whether or not you think the current 3DTV technology is actually any good, or just a novelty, is neither here nor there to Sky, who has already become the first UK broadcaster to offer 3DTV, particularly a lot of football and other sport to pubs. If you are one of the lucky early adopters of 3DTVs, then you should read on because its about to get a lot more functional. This Friday, Sky launches Sky 3D, Europes first in-home 3D channel. The channel will bring what Sky are calling Event TV to your living room and just in case you are wondering exactly what they mean, its really just a whole lot of sport, movies, arts and documentaries. So what, if anything, should you be setting your Sky+ for on Sky 3D? Thankfully, Sky has broken it down for me, and out of the goodness of my heart I am passing it on to you. Sport As I said, a lot of sporty stuff has already been aired in pubs around the country, but with it coming to the home Im sure you are chomping at the bit to find out whats on. Barclays Premier League matches will be aired, and not just any matches either, with the Manchester, Merseyside and North London derbies, plus Man City vs Arsenal and Liverpool vs Chelsea in October and November respectively. Keeping with football, the first 3D broadcast from Scotland will be aired on the 12th October as Scotland face Spain at Hampden Park in a Euro 2012 qualifier, this will also become the first international match shown in 3D. In addition to that you can catch the hotly-anticipated grudge fight between David Haye and Audley Harrison for the WBA World Heavyweight Championship, and finally you can also catch the Rugby Union Autumn Internations between England, New Zealand, world champions South Africa and of course the old enemy from Oz. Summary A wonderfully impressive start, Sky, so if my opinion counts for anything, keep it up and perhaps I might be convinced to actually take the plunge and invest in a 3D television. The battleground that matters most for the banking and finance industry right now is the profits it is making from commodities trading. Over the last few days, prices have been bouncing all over the place, a reminder for everyone of just how unstable the market in food and raw materials has become. Now there is a backlash building. The banks should take note of that. If they don’t, they could easily be driven out of this business — and they will only have themselves to blame. Investors held a record $412 billion of raw-material assets at the end of March, almost 50 percent more than a year earlier, according to estimates by Barclays Capital. Trading in futures and options contracts is rising rapidly. For banks and fund managers, it is a lucrative business. And the more volatile it is, the more profitable it gets. Not everyone is happy about that. Last month, Barclays Plc (BARC) was targeted at its annual general meeting for its trading profits in food commodities. The World Development Movement, a London-based group, claims that Barclays may be making as much as 340 million pounds ($554 million) a year from “food speculative activities.” That may be exaggerated, but there will be plenty of sympathy for that view. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has blamed speculators for pushing up food prices. The European Union’s financial services commissioner, Michel Barnier, is even calling for limits on trading in commodities.
