Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), definito il Principe dei Predicatori, nacque in Inghilterra e predic l per tutta la seconda met del XIX secolo. Nel 1854, appena quattro anni dopo la sua conversione, Spurgeon, appena ventenne, divenne pastore della famosa London's New Park Street Church (dove gi aveva svolto ministero di pastorato il famoso teologo battista John Gill). La congregazione rapidamente divenne troppo grande e non ci stavano pi nella chiesa, cos si trasfer a Exeter Hall, e poi a Surrey Music Hall. In questi luoghi spesso Spurgeon predic a un pubblico di pi di 10.000 persone. Nel 1861 la congregazione si trasfer definitivamente in una nuova costruzione: il Metropolitan Tabernacle.
