Proponents say action will save taxpayers $123. 1 billion over 30 years Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday signed legislation that will make 500,000 state and local government employees pay more for their health and pension benefits while saving New Jersey taxpayers of over $120 billion over the next 30 years, and an additional $3.1 billion over the next 10 years from health benefits change. The signing was described by proponents of the controversial legislation as marking the end of months of hard work, negotiation, compromise and ultimately bipartisan support. Looking over Christie’s shoulder as he signed was Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney (D-Gloucester) who joined with the Republican governor in developing the bipartisan legislation and in doing so garnered the wrath of public employee unions who have vowed to oppose the re-election in November of any Democratic legislator who supported the bill.
