Canucks Army :: The Biggest Difference Between Luongo and Schneider (Sports Blogs)
When it comes to technique, Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider are extremely similar goaltenders. They're both large, athletic goalies who play a reasonably aggressive, technically sound butterfly style. They both like to challenge shooters and cut off the angle, and both have an elite catching mitt, making both of them tough to beat glove side. Schneider is...

Canucks' Schneider replaces Luongo for Game 6 | World News Updater
Cory Schneider, seen in the regular season game, will make his third appearance in the net of Vancouver, but this time as a starter. Cory Schneider started in place.
Handicapping NHL success a fools errand
By Cam Cole Science, this isnt. Trying to figure out in October who might win the Stanley Cup in June is a mugs game, and to those who will attempt it either in aid of a pool or a bet, or just to prove how smart you are remember this: One team in 30 will win, which means 29 wont, and those are pretty bad odds. Even if you eliminate the no-hopers before you start the winnowing-out process, there are a lot of pitfalls out there, a lot of teams with huge constituencies whose heroes could easily fall by the wayside because of The Unbearable Heaviness of Being an aspiring dynasty. Why? Because in order to win the Stanley Cup, you have to load up, strain the salary cap, damn the future, and sell half the roster on the future benefits of being associated with a Cup-winning team, all the while knowing that the piper, in a cap system, always gets paid. Hence, the summer exodus of Chicago Blackhawks playoff scoring phenom Dustin Byfuglien, Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd, John Madden, Ben Eager, Adam Burish, Brent Sopel and goaltender Antti Niemi. You wonder why no team since the 1997 Detroit Red Wings has successfully defended the Cup? The cap, which came in after the 2004-05 lockout, has made the unlikely just about impossible. Were not in favour of or opposed to dynasty teams, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said on a Tuesday conference call. What the Blackhawks did, very successfully, is make a conscious decision to make a series of moves to get themselves into a position to be extraordinarily competitive. But they understood that there were cap consequences. The benefit of the cap is that all clubs, in theory, have an equal chance to spend wisely, within limits, and win. The downside? There may never be another dynasty. Let the winnowing begin A Canadian team And not just because quality free agents who have reached the age of choice often opt for creature comfort and American tax law and 12-month golf seasons. Vancouver, especially post-Olympics, certainly doesnt suffer from a rejection complex the way Edmonton and Ottawa do and Winnipeg used to. And anyone who spurns Montreal on the basis of lifestyle needs to give his head a shake. But its a fact that Canadian markets tend to eat their young, love their teams to death, analyze them to exhaustion, and the suffocating pressure of playing in that relentless environment is widely held to be a prime reason no Canadian team has won a Cup in 17, going on 18, seasons. A team from the Apple, Big or Little Well, this at least is a no-brainer. Its easy enough to eliminate the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs simply on the grounds that they either havent recovered from years of incompetent management, or are still labouring under it. Too much ego in the big city, too much self-importance, too much smoke blown up their butts every time they string a couple of wins together, too much teeth-gnashing over slow-developing kids (see: Nazem Kadri, the Leafs No. 1 prospect who was sent to the minors Monday, or pretty much any Ranger draft pick of the Sather era). Kadris demotion, which he took with considerable grace, was accompanied by a Toronto Sun front page image of the young forward, in whose mouth some editor thought it would be humorous to PhotoShop a babys soother. Awwwwwwwww, look at the cute, little BABY LEAF, shouted the headline. If you ever got drafted by the Loafs, wouldnt you want to run screaming in the other direction? A Madison Avenue darling Is it the perfect intro to a super rivalry, or the kiss of death, that HBOs acclaimed 24/7 series is about to film four weeks of unlimited access to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals for its Road to the Winter Classic? On the bright side, the New York Jets dont seem to have suffered from their 24/7 Hard Knocks series but thats an NFL team with potty-mouthed Rex Ryan in the head coachs role. This is the somewhat less than brash Sidney Crosby and friends, coached by scholarly Dan Bylsma, and Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals, and though its dead certain to be rife with F-bombs this, after all, is hockey and Ovechkin and coach Bruce Boudreau will provide a ton of colour, HBOs project is going to have to dig awfully deep to find the hidden dark side of Sid. HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg says the programs will bring you into the team meeting rooms, into the locker rooms, the planes on chartered flights, at home, everywhere these players, coaches, assistant coaches go wanna bet? and yes, every once in a while you might hear a little salty language with a little Canadian or Russian flair to it. Maybe in Episode 4, Sid yells at a Penguin equipment kid, or refuses to make his bed, and Mme. Lemieux has to call the maid in. But if youre looking for raunch, Ovie will have to carry the mail. A team with a short goaltender Pity the Chris Osgoods and Manny Legaces, the Marty Turcos and Tim Thomases theyre nearing the end of the line, and their careers arent going to be extended any by new rules further restricting goalie equipment. This years specific crackdown limits goal pads to reach no higher than 55% of the distance from knee to pelvis, so the shorter the goalie, the shorter the pads. The above-named, and a few others like L.A.s sub-six-footers Jonathan Bernier and Jonathan Quick, will cover proportionately less net than goalies like the Canucks 6-foot-3 Roberto Luongo, 6-foot-2 Cory Schneider, to use just one teams stable as an example. I know it hasnt been the fastest process, but weve trimmed up areas where players can see more net and time will tell if a few more are going to sneak through the legs, said Kay Whitmore, the NHLs goalie-equipment sheriff. Maybe 15% of the guys were hoping to close the five-hole with excess padding thats been removed. I think this new method is a much better way of measuring. I think this will hold the fort here for a while. What no amount of tinkering will do is stop the evolution of the position from quickness to size. So what does all of this tell us? That your best bet to win the Cup is a non-champion, non-Canadian, non-overexposed team that isnt carrying too many scars from repeated failures, and has a tall goaltender? Detroit versus Buffalo? Surely it cant be that simple. Somehow, I have a feeling the Blackhawks will fill their bottom-half holes and contend, proving conclusively that finding plumbers is not rocket science. And the Canucks and maybe the Sharks or Kings are going to have something to say about the West title, too. And the Penguins, unless Sergei Gonchar turns out to be irreplaceable and the Flyers, led again by Chris Pronger and the irrepressible Capitals, with Ovechkin the most highly-motivated superstar in captivity theyll all be in the Easts final four. But if it is that simple, and it turns out be Detroit-Buffalo? Im patenting the formula, and running for commissioner when Gary Bettmans term expires or Hell freezes over, whichever comes first. How far will the Canucks go this season?
For probably the first time in history, the Canucks are actually one of the favorites going into the new season. With a new defense corps sporting prized acquisitions Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis, the offense being led by Art Ross trophy winner Henrik Sedin, and with backup goaltender Cory Schneider seemingly capable to carry part of the load, allowing our Olympic gold medalist Roberto Luongo to dazzle us deep into the playoffs, this could very well be the year we make our deepest run into the playoffs ever!
Canucks to remove laces from Luongo’s skates as added precaution
VANCOUVER, BC—Concerned about the delicate mental state of Roberto Luongo, the Vancouver Canucks announced they are removing the laces from the skates of their beleaguered goalie to ensure he doesn’t harm himself in anyway. Luongo, who has previously suffered from several bouts of postseason depression, is again in the midst of a deeply troubling series against the Blackhawks. Pulled from Games 4 and 5 and benched in Game 6, Luongo was forced into action after backup goalie Cory Schneider injured his hamstring. He then gave up a goal in overtime, placing the Canucks on the brink of another playoff collapse and Luongo on the verge of psychological breakdown. “We’re not necessarily saying Robert will do anything to endanger himself,” explained Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault, “But when you have a guy with a past such as his, you want to play it safe. It can get dark and lonely in that net. You blow a few games, you start to feel worthless. You look down at your skates. You look back at the crossbar. Some dark thoughts can start to bubble up. So we’re pulling the laces out of skates just make sure he doesn’t try anything." When asked if he had any words of encouragement for Luongo, Vigneault responded, "We want Robert to know we support him. He’s a part of this team and we don’t want to lose him, especially since Schneider’s hamstring is hurt. If we lose Luongo too we’re really screwed,” he quickly added, “More than normal.”
