Have you ever wondered, walking through a video rental shop or trying to look through the Netflix catalogue, only to not know quite what to toss into your queue or rip off the shelf? Then how about letting Werner Herzog help with that problem? Herzog recently sat down with NPR, and let us all on to a few of his favorite films, three to be exact. First, for those who may not know, Herzog runs a special series of seminars known as the Rouge Film School, and with a mission statement starting with The Rogue Film School is not for the faint-hearted, you can kind of get the image of Herzog running a film school burnt into your brain. During the interview, the director mentions a few of the films that find their way onto the syllabus at the school, including The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Viva Zapata, and Swingtime. There couldnt be a better trilogy of film to sum up the filmmaker. With Sierra Madre, you get one of films most classic adventure films, and with looking at the films themes, while not as inherently obsession based as Herzogs filmography, you definitely see a bit of correlation between the two. Then, with Viva Zapata, you get the legendary Elia Kazan directed biopic, which is something, with Rescue Dawn, you definitely see a bit of relationship there. The one film I cant speak to here is Swingtime as, unfortunately, its on my list of shame as I havent gotten down to watching it. HBO has finally announced a premiere date for my most anticipated television show of the near future Boardwalk Empire, the Prohibition-era gangster television series created by Terence Winter and Martin Scorsese. HBOs Boardwalk Empire TV series is set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States. America in 1920. The Great War is over, Wall Street is about to boom and everything is for sale, even the World Series. It is a time of change when women are getting the vote, broadcast radio is introduced, and young people rule the world. On the beach in southern New Jersey sits Atlantic City, a spectacular resort known as The Worlds Playground, a place where rules dont apply. Massive hotels line its famous Boardwalk, along with nightclubs, amusement piers and entertainment to rival Broadway. For a few dollars, a working man can get away and live like a king-legally or illegally. In HBOs Boardwalk Empire, the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City is the towns Treasurer, Enoch Nucky Thompson, (Steve Buscemi) a political fixer and backroom dealer who is equal parts politician and gangster and equally comfortable in either role. Because of its strategic location on the seaboard, the town is a hub of activity for rum-runners, minutes from Philadelphia, hours from New York City and less than a days drive from Chicago. And Nucky Thompson takes full advantage in HBOs Boardwalk Empire. Along with his brother Elias (Shea Whigham), the towns Sheriff, and a crew of Ward Bosses and local thugs, Nucky carves out a niche for himself in HBOs Boardwalk Empire as the man to see for any illegal alcohol. In Boardwalk Empire, he is an equal opportunity gangster, doing business with Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), Big Jim Colosimo (Frank Crudele), Lucky Luciano, (Vincent Piazza) and Al Capone (Stephen Graham). As HBOs Boardwalk Empire TV show begins, Nuckys former protg and driver Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) returns home from the Great War, eager to get ahead and reclaim his rightful place in Nuckys organization. But when Jimmy feels things arent moving quickly enough, he takes matters into his own hands in Boardwalk Empire, forming a deadly alliance with some associates of Nuckys that set the Feds, led by Agent Van Alden (Michael Shannon) on his mentors tail. Complicating matters further is Nuckys burgeoning relationship with Margaret Schroeder, (Kelly Macdonald) a local woman in an abusive marriage whom he tries to help out.
