During my short assignment in Ecuador, while working with eni, I had the opportunity to visit the Cotopaxi volcano. The Cotopaxi volcano is considered as the most beautiful, the most symmetrical and the most perfect mountain cone. The name "Coto-Paxi" is of Quichua origin (Inca language still being spoken among the Indians of the Andes) and means "the neck of the moon". With its 5897 m, Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in the world. This mountain is located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes and is the cornerstone of the Cotopaxi National Park. This volcano is a symmetrical volcanic stratum with average slopes of 40-45 degrees. It is covered by huge glaciers, particularly on the east face. The other side recorded a significant decline in glaciers. The picture below show the Cotopaxi volcano. My experience in visiting Cotopaxi was really amazing and an experience you cannot forget. A picnic at the foot of this lovely volcano is an enjoyable way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. Driving south from Quito on the Pan-American Highway, the turnoff to reach this snow-capped volcano is soon after the Clirsen station. This takes about an hour and half from Quito. Be sure to wear warm clothing, as it can be quite cold. The dirt road and the gradual climb up to the snow line is an extremely interesting trip. There is a "refugio" at 4,800 meters located near the snow line that you can reach by climbing only from the parking area (Parquedero) located at 4,500 meter. The walk, indeed, the climbing is extremely hard but when you reach the "refugio Jose F Ribas" the panorama is breathtaking. The picture below shows Diego Braghi at the "refugio".
