WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd said on Tuesday that he would not support the Obama administration using a recess appointment if it wants Elizabeth Warren to head the new consumer financial protection agency.

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) says Elizabeth Warren might not have the votes to win confirmation as head of a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency, The Hill reports. Said Dodd: "I think Elizabeth would be a terrific nominee. The question is, 'Is she confirmable?' And there's a serious question about it." "Liberals have pushed Warren's name as a possible choice to lead the new agency, which was created in the Wall Street reform bill, legislation Dodd helped to author. Her record as chairwoman of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) oversight board has caused those on the left to be optimistic that she would add some teeth to the new agency."

Mr. Dodd, speaking at New York University Law School's fourth annual Global Economic Policy Forum, said he would support Elizabeth Warren, above, the Harvard law professor who is setting up the new consumer bureau, if the White House nominates her to be its director. But he reiterated his view that Ms. Warren, a strong consumer advocate, would have trouble being confirmed because of opposition from Republicans and the financial industry.
