Steven Johnsons 20 greatest inventions
In his book Where Good Things Come From, Steven Johnson looks at the history of innovation. He also lists the very real things that have come out these good ideas. PRINTING PRESS: The concept of movable type dates back to Chinese and Korean inventors, but the first true printing press that combined the screw press (used in wine-making) and movable type was created by Johannes Gutenberg circa 1440. CONCAVE LENS: Lenses had been used to magnify images and start fires for thousands of years, but German cardinal Nicholas of Cusa is believed the first to use a concave lens to treat myopia in 1451. PARACHUTE: The original design for a parachute was sketched in 1483 by Leonardo da Vinci in the margins of a notebook. However, a primitive parachute was not used until 1783, when Louis-Sebastien Lenormand leapt from Frances Montpelier Observatory. PENCIL: Residents of Englands Cumbria village stumbled upon a massive deposit of granite in the mid-1560s and began using the graphite to mark their livestock. They later encased the substance in wood, but the invention was not completed with an eraser until two hundred years later. FLUSH TOILET: Sir John Harrington invented a water flushing device in 1596 for his godmother, Queen Elizabeth. It was not until the late 1700s that a watchmaker named Alexander Cumings and a cabinet-maker named Joseph Bramah filed for two separate patents based on Mr. Harringtons design. OCEAN TIDES: Galileo Galilei first offered an explanation of ocean tides in relation to the sun, though he was later proved incorrect in 1632 by Johannes Kepler who realized that the moon was responsible for the phenomenon. It was not until 1687 that Isaac Newton waded in with a fully developed explanation. PENDULUM CLOCK: In 1656, Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens invented an accurate clock using the regular oscillations of a weighted pendulum. His invention built upon the ideas of Galileo. PIANO: In the 1700s, Bartolomeo Cristofori improved upon the harpsichord and clavichord and, in the process, created what he then called a pianoforte (since shortened to piano). CARBONATED WATER: A clergyman named Joseph Priestly first created the effervescent beverage in 1767, after discovering that he could charge water using carbon dioxide. Many inventors exapted the idea, and later capitalized on the business opportunities born from Mr. Priestlys invention. ELECTRIC BATTERY: The electric battery was born out of zinc and copper discs in 1800, after an argument between inventor Alessandro Volta and his peer Luigi Galvani, who thought animal tissue was the source of electricity. BRAILLE: In 1821, a blind 15-year-old named Louis Braille invented the Braille form of reading. His work improved on the rudimentary system conceived by army captain Charles Barbier. PHOTOGRAPHY: Although historians typically credit French chemist Louis Daguerre with conceiving the first practical photographic process in 1839, his idea fixing images on copper in a chemical substance, and then exposing them to light built on the hunches of Frenchman Joseph Nicephore Niepce. ASPIRIN: The pain-relieving properties of willow bark and its salicin had been known since Hippocrates, but the side effects primarily stomach pain limited its use. It was not until 1897, when French chemist Charles Gerhardt added sodium and acetyl chloride, that the drug was improved. HEREDITY: The notion of heredity first originated with Gregor Mendels work with plants, but the idea was not synthesized into a wider theory of genetics until the early 20th century, by Thomas Hunt Morgan. LIGHTBULB: American inventor Thomas Alva Edison is credited with inventing the lightbulb in 1879, but his work built on the ideas of at least a half-dozen others who came before him. MOTORCYCLE AND AUTOMOBILE: Germanys Gottlieb Daimler built upon Nikolaus Ottos internal-combustion engine by connecting it to a bicycle in 1885. That same year, Mr. Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach created a four-wheel, four-stroke engine automobile, and Karl Benz known as the ultimate inventor of the modern automobile created a motor car powered by an internal combustion engine and gasoline. RADIO: Italian engineer Guglielmo Marconi is historically credited with inventing the modern radio in 1896, but his work with radio waves and wireless telegraphy built on the hunches of many others before him. COMPUTER: German engineer Konrad Zuse is known as the inventor of the first fully functioning modern computer, built on a binary system in 1944. However, Charles Babbage, Alan Turing, and John Vincent Ansoff can also be credited with inventing other forms of computers. INTERNET: With the help of many other computer scientists, American Vinton Cerf designed and created the original Internet in the mid-1970s. WORLD WIDE WEB: Tim Berners-Lee, a British software engineer, built on a slow hunch until he designed the program for the World Wide Web in 1990. His creation of a hypertext notebook was inspired by the memory of a childhood encyclopedia.
