The Nuggets know they cant get a Melo for Melo. But they can get younger, bigger and free up salary cap space. That appears to be the direction they are heading, according to multiple NBA sources who say a four-team trade that would send the Nuggets Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey could happen this weekend, as talks are ongoing. The blockbuster trade, according to a source close to the negotiations, has legs but is complicated by the number of teams involved and the need for Anthony to sign a contract extension. If the current trade being discussed goes through, it would send Anthony to the Nets while Denver would acquire Nets rookie post Derrick Favors, the No. 3 overall pick in this years draft. The Nuggets also would get forward Andrei Kirilenko and his expiring $18 million contract from Utah. He averaged 11.9 points per game last season but battled injuries. And, as of late Friday night, the proposed deal would land the Nuggets a 2012 first-round pick from New Jersey, which previously belonged to Golden State. Anthony is believed to be the only Nuggets player involved in the trade. The Nets would trade point guard Devin Harris to Charlotte and reserve Quinton Ross to Utah, which would also receive forward Boris Diaw from Charlotte. The source close to the negotiations said there are hurdles because New Jersey is worried about its point guard situation, should it trade Harris, and would try to acquire Charlottes D.J. Augustin, if the teams can make it work. In addition, Anthony must agree to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension in order for the trade to be completed. Its believed Melo will sign that extension, a source said. The Record in Hackensack, N.J., reported late Friday that Anthony agreed to an extension, citing a league source. Melos representatives have been pushing hard for a trade to New York or Chicago, but the Knicks didnt have anything the Nuggets wanted, and Denver wasnt going to trade with the Bulls unless it got Joakim Noah. As of Friday, the Bulls were holding on to Noah. Calls to Anthony were not returned. The new-look Nuggets management team is working to get the deal done this weekend so the team can start fresh Monday, when the Nuggets have their media day. Their first practice is Tuesday. Anthony has remained quiet throughout the past few weeks when trade talks heated up. He has never publicly said he wants out of Denver, but his refusal to sign the contract extension, combined with his impending free agency after this upcoming season, led Nuggets management to conclude it would be better trading him now than getting little in return next summer. The Nets have a new owner (Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov), a new general manager (Billy King, who was with the 76ers when they made the Allen Iverson trade with Denver), a new coach (Avery Johnson) and a budding star post player (Brook Lopez). Also, with the addition of Melo and expiring contracts, the team could go after Melos close friend Chris Paul, the Hornets all-star point guard. As for the Nuggets, a source close to the team said they are high on the potential of the 19-year-old Favors, a 6-foot-10, 246-pounder who played one year of college ball at Georgia Tech. He was the ACC rookie of the year after averaging 12.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 27.5 minutes per game. At South Atlanta High School, he was named Parade Magazines high school player of the year in 2009. He won MVP honors at the McDon- alds All-American game and the Jordan Brand Classic. Kirilenko has slipped in recent years, but hes only 29. The move could help Denvers roster flexibility down the line. Along with Kirilenkos roughly $18 million coming off the books next summer, Denver also will lose the contracts of free-agents-to-be Kenyon Martin ($16.5 million), J.R. Smith ($6 million) and Arron Afflalo ($2 million). And Nene, who is making around $11 million, can opt out of his contract. The Nuggets could have enormous room to maneuver and rebuild their roster. Footnote. The Nuggets have five free-agent invitees coming to camp next week, bringing the roster total to 17. They are center Eric Boateng, forward Shane Edwards, forward Melvin Ely, forward Gary Forbes and center Courtney Sims.
