Sean O'Donnell leaves Kings for Flyers
Sean O'Donnell, the veteran defenseman who mentored Drew Doughty and was a steadying presence for the Kings last season, has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers for $1 million plus bonuses. O'Donnell, soon to be 39, was told last week by General Manager Dean Lombardi that he would have to playa reduced role with the Kings this season, perhaps as a seventh defenseman, but Lombardi said O'Donnell believes he can still play top-four minutes. O'Donnell, who won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007, isa strong and valuable presence in the locker room but, as Coach Terry Murray said, the game got a little fast for him during the playoffs. His departure will give youngsters like Davis Drewiske, Thomas Hickey, Alec Martinez and Colten Teubert a chance to make the Kings' roster next season. It also leaves space for them to sign a top-four defenseman as a free agent, though twoof the big names are gone. Sergei Gonchar left Pittsburgh for a three-year deal with Ottawa at $5.5 million per year and Zbynek Michalek left Phoenix for Pittsburgh for a five-year, $20-million deal. That leaves Paul Martin, Anton Volchenkov and Dan Hamhuis still in play. More as things happen... -- Helene Elliott Photo: Sean O'Donnell in 2009. Credit: Los Angeles Times.
Sean O'Donnell: Kings never made an offer
Classy veteran defenseman Sean O'Donnell, who left the Kings as a free agent to sign a one-year, $1-million deal (plus bonuses) with the Philadelphia Flyers, said Kings General Manager Dean Lombardidid not offer him a new deal--but he has no hard feelings. "I don't really know what their plan is. Dean and I spoke but it was informal," O'Donnell said by phone. "I think I was more of a Plan C or Plan D for them. Maybe they have something else going. I don't know." Lombardi said last week he had suggested that O'Donnell might have to take a reduced role next season, butO'Donnell -- who will be 39 in October -- had balked. O'Donnell confirmed that. "I still thought, especially in the situation here in L.A., I still had more left in me than what Dean felt I had," he said. He said the Flyers, who lost tothe Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals, "called within five minutes of free agency. It was the first offer I got and it seemed like a good fit." Some other teams were interested, he said, but none stepped up. "It's a team that came very close, obviously, with how far they got," he said. The move will reunite him with Chris Pronger, his teammate on the Ducks' 2007 Stanley Cup championship team. "We've spoken a couple of times and he can be pretty persuasive," O'Donnell said. "We're still good friends, but that wasn't the only reason I went there." O'Donnell was a good mentor to the Kings' young defensemen the past two seasons and he will be missed as a voice of reason in their locker room. Helen Thomas Cries When She Learns Of President Obamas Comments About Her
Former Dean of the White House Press Corps Helen Thomas is making news again after granting her first broadcast interview since her controversial retirement (she first broke her silence in a brief interview with Mediaite). While printed accounts of the 35-minute radio interview have focused on her inflammatory remarks, subsequent apology, and her opinions of flashpoint politicians Christine ODonnell and Sarah Palin, they ignore a portion of the interview that packs an emotional wallop. Apparently learning of them for the first time, Helen reacts tearfully to a quote fromPresident Obama
