Snail caviar! The new gourmet frontier
Dominique and Sylvie Pierru ditched their old jobs in 2004 -- he as a construction worker, she running a fine food market stall -- to set up their snail farm, and start work on a recipe for caviar. The next three years were spent perfecting a way to harvest the eggs of their 50,000 gasteropods, reared on an open-air diet of herbs and cereals
PIZZA – HISTORICAL BACKGROUND | spanishchef.net
PIZZA – HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Although he did not realise it, Stone Age man was probably the inventor of the pizza. He mixed together ground wheat and water to form a type of dough, and cooked it in discs on or between Hat stones which had been heated up in the fire. Primitive man continued to bake ‘bread’ in this way until the time of the ancient Egyptians, who invented the conical-shaped stone oven which was similar to the modern pizza oven of today. They used to bake their bread discs by sticking them to the hot outside walls of the oven, turning them over when they fell off and cooking them on the other side. The Egyptians left no record of having made pizzas, but there are references to a type of pizza made by the Greeks and Romans, which they topped with olives, honey or various other herbs and spices. The name “pizza’ probably originated in Naples around 1000 A.D., where flat discs of a bread—like substance were first called ‘picea’ and then ‘piza’. Pizzas, as we know them today, can be traced back to the 17008. They appeared long after the introduction into Europe of the tomato, which originated in Peru. Previously this ‘strange fruit’ was used as an ornamental plant. It was later discovered that it could be put to better use. At first, pizzas were made and sold by the roadside on stalls and it was not until the early 1800s that the first Pizzeria appeared in Naples, where people could sit down at a table and enjoy their favourite pizza accompanied by a glass of local wine. Though well known, it is worth telling the famous story about the most renowned pizza e Pizza Margherita. In the late 1800s Queen Margherita was resident, as she was every summer, with her family at their lodge in Capodimonte Park in Naples. Having heard so much talk about an innovation called pizza, she summoned the most famous Neapolitan pizzaiuolo (pizza-maker), Don Raffaele Esposito, to court and demanded to taste this new dish. The pizzaiuolo was so pro

Libido enhancers and strength boosters: A beginners guide to ya dong
A common sight on the streets of Bangkok, ya dong stalls are easily recognized by what appear to be rows of cookie jars, illuminated by poorly rigged fluorescent lights. Under their airtight lids is a dark brown concoction, made by mixing rice whiskey with traditionally healthy herbs, sometimes honey and god knows what else. Despite many medicinal forms of this moonshine being outlawed, Bangkok is filled with ya dong stands, most set up only a few feet away from street food vendors. When night falls they turn into popular watering holes. There is qu
Spices for the holidays - spanishchef.net
Spices for the holidays All of these and much more come from The Spice House, a seductive storefront that often contributes a heavenly outdoor aroma to Old World Third Street. The shop is a few steps south of Mader’s. A dazzling inventory of herbs, spices and extracts can quickly turn a macaroni and cheese from-a-box bachelor into an enthusiastic foodie. “People come in here to read the labels,” store manager Kate Erd says. “Use good, fresh spices and people will think you really know how to cook.” The Spice House dates back to 1957, when Ruth Penzey and her late husband, Bill Penzey, Sr., started the business on 33rd and Galena. Little did they know they were founding an empire. The Penzeys moved their store to the 1000 block of North Old World Third Street in 1976, occupying at different times spaces that now house Lucille’s Rockin’ Pianos and the southern half of the Wisconsin Cheese Mart. They sold the business to their daughter Patty and her husband, Tom Erd, in 1992 when The Spice House moved to its present location. Under the Erds, the business has expanded to include a large stall at the Milwaukee Public Market and shops in Chicago, Evanston and Geneva, Ill. Meanwhile, another member of the family, Bill Penzey, Jr., has grown a separate spice business, branded as Penzey’s, into a national retailer with stores stretching across the country from Orlando to Seattle. Both The Spice House and Penzey’s also have mail-order operations that allow customers to purchases spices by phone and online.

Beginning life as a market stall in 2006, Unpackaged is a unique and brilliant concept that is so simple it hurts, especially considering the sheer amount of packaging waste that is ridiculously filling our planet’s landfill sites. Venovil For Varicose And Spider Veins
Varicose and spider veins are common medical complaints that result when blood flow from outlying parts of the body back to the heart becomes compromised. Veins in the leg are the most commonly affected, particularly on the back of the calf. These veins contain a series of leaflet valves that allow only upward blood movement. Transport of blood up the leg to the heart proceeds via ladder-like steps through this series of valves. Varicose and spider veins result when vein walls develop poor tone, causing valve malfunction. Blood then stalls out on its upward journey and may even move down the leg. Valve malfunction in smaller vessels produces spider veins. In larger ones, varicose veins result. The characteristic color of varicose and spider veins, observable only for veins near the surface, derives from the bluish-red tint of oxygen-depleted venous blood. While there are no medical treatments to prevent the causes of spider veins there are a number effective ways to get rid of them. There are laser techniques and injections that are effective but can be very costly and require follow up treatments. More and more people are turning to alternative medicine and experimenting with natural techniques and medicines to combat the causes of spider veins. Some holistic doctors suggest increasing your intake of bioflavenoids, an ingredient found just below the surface of most citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits. Bioflavenoids strengthen capillary and vein walls which when they get weak are one of the main causes of spider veins. Other doctors of natural healing suggest that exercises that tone the legs, such as laying on the back and raising the legs are effective. The theory behind this is that the blood drains from the spidered veins thus relieving pressure and reducing swelling. These exercises are not only good for battling spider veins but are also great for overall circulation. Compression stockings are pantyhose socks designed to help with varicose veins removal. It gives comfort, and it promotes better circulation. They are generally recommended for busy people who sit, stand or travel for long hours. Physicians support its use as a preventative measure and after having sclerotherapy to avoid the reappearance of spider veins and varicose veins. There are also herbal remedies to this problem. One of the most effective herbs that has been used is the Horse Chestnut. This is more of a topical use type of herb. Some experimenters have cited this as the most effective treatment for varicose veins. Another herb that can be used to treat this problems is Butchers Broom. This herb is used to promote blood flow. It can also be used as a topical herb or it can be used as an internal remedy too. Natural solutions include taking Ginkgo supplements which help to strengthen vein walls in the legs. Horse Chestnut supplements have also been recommended by leading herbalist and doctors. Another natural and therapeutic way is to apply a cold compress dipped in witch hazel and essential oils to the affected area to calm the painful veins. Those interested in a natural solution or treatment to the problem should consider Venovil products. Mapplr?s favorite restaurants in Hong Kong
I love Hong Kong. It?s the ultimate urban experience: massive high-rise apartments, busy crowded markets selling pungent Chinese herbs and serpents, fabulous boutiques just doors away from obviously fake luxury goods vendor stalls. Yet, you can get away from it all by simply taking a boat to one of the islands around the harbor.
