Charlie Manuel has found a flaw in Roy Halladays game. He still needs a little work on his bunting, the Philadelphia Phillies manager said. But I guess the old saying is, if you can hit, you might not have to bunt a lot. In the second inning of his no-hitter Wednesday night, Halladay lined an RBI single off Cincinnati starter Edinson Volquez to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Reds manager Dusty Baker called it the biggest hit of the game. Manuel said Halladays hitting has improved since he left the Toronto Blue Jays in December for the National League. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins said Halladay approaches batting practice as he does everything else. Hes not messing around, Rollins said. Hes working. You can see that. But thats just him. Halladay went 13-for-92 (.141) and had five RBIs in the regular season. In 10 seasons with the Blue Jays, he went 3-for-38 with one RBI. Placido Polanco, who missed Wednesdays game with back stiffness, was much improved Thursday and expects to play in Game 2 Friday, Manuel said. Baker plans two lineup changes. Ryan Hannigan, personal catcher for starter Bronson Arroyo, will replace Ramon Hernandez. Laynce Nix, who is 9-for-17 against Phillies starter Roy Oswalt, will replace left-fielder Jonny Gomes. After Halladays gem in Game 1, Oswalt jokingly told his teammates to get him a lot of runs on Friday night. He seemed to figure the Reds would be ready to explode after starving against Halladay. But Oswalt does have a nice track record vs. Cincinnati: 23-3 and a 2.81 ERA in 31 games while pitching for Houston. The Reds did defeat him twice this year. History does not favour the Reds in this series. Only three teams have won an NLDS after losing Game 1: the 1999 Atlanta Braves and 2000 New York Mets, who each went on to win the league championship; and the 2003 Florida Marlins, who won the World Series.
