Former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan (R) will report raising $580,000 in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to his campaign. That's a mighty sum for the first-time Congressional candidate, who Republicans lured from a crowded gubernatorial field this summer to run for Rep. Joe Sestak's (D-Pa.) suburban Philadelphia seat.

There are, it appears, still areas where President Obama's endorsement carries cachet, including in traditionally swing states and districts. Bryan Lentz, a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives who is running for Rep. Joe Sestak's soon-to-be-vacant congressional seat, announced on Thursday that he had the backing of the president in his latest run for office. Lentz is running in Pennsylvania's seventh district, which encompasses the suburbs of Philadelphia (an area the Obama campaign worked hard during 2008, though occasionally by dispatching Michelle). Once reliably conservative, it has trended Democratic in recent elections. In 2008, Sestak beat his opponent by 19.6 points. But, like all things this cycle, the politics are a bit convoluted, especially when surrounding the president. Obama's current favorability rating in Pennsylvania is 42.4 percent, according to pollster.com averages; 47.2 percent view him unfavorably. Lentz, however, has been quite eager to embrace the White House. Vice President Joseph Biden has already done a fundraiser on his behalf and Kevin McTigue, his campaign manager, made no secret that they would welcome the president on the trail. "We have certainly asked for it," McTigue said. "He is the president of the United States so that immediately adds a lot of credibility to the endorsement and he remains pretty popular in the 7th. So given that it is a pretty big development for the campaign."
