PHOTOS: Stars Kick Loose At Golden Globe Parties! (AOL Television)
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Post parties after the Golden Globe Awards, less raucous than in previous years, flowed instead of crackled, conjuring up the understated 1920s glamor of black-and-white French-directed silent film and Globe comedy or musical winner "The Artist." Celebrities at several after-parties located around the Beverly Hilton Hotel following Sunday's awards ceremony made the rounds noshing on gourmet comfort food, sipping martinis, chatting and dancing, but the overall party vibe felt more serene than spastic. Sophisticated, pared down decorations completed the effect, adding to a certain "je ne sais quoi" in the air. "It's felt very, very mellow tonight, but in a good way," said "American Horror Story" star Connie Britton just before midnight at the Warner Bros. bash with InStyle magazine at the hotel's Oasis courtyard. Britton, fresh off celebrating Jessica Lange's supporting actress in a series, miniseries or TV movie win for the show, summed up the sense of laidback acceptance pervasive at the parties: "Jessica's win felt communal. I came here to support the show. I didn't feel pressure about winning or losing," said Britton, who also noted she was tired, with a newly adopted baby to care for at home. "Modern Family" ...

The Goldman Hearings: Levin vs. Wall Street (New Yorker)
The most striking thing about today's big Senate subcommittee hearing on the role of investment banks in the financial crisis has not been the testimony of the Goldman Sachs traders and managing directors, but rather the opening statement of Senator Carl Levin, the subcommittee's chair. Levin's basic argument--which he made over the weekend when he released four e-mails from Goldman employees showing that the company had shorted the U.S. housing market in 2007--is that it's an illegitimate conflict of interest for an investment bank to ever sell a product that it thinks will lose value. More than that, Levin also implicitly suggested that there was something wrong __per se__ with betting that the housing market would crash, suggesting that while it's good to make money from good things happening, it's nefarious to put yourself in a position to make money when bad things happen. Felix Salmon explains why the first argument doesn't make sense with regard to broker-dealers. As I write in my column this week, there are plenty of things to criticize Wall Street for, and there are myriad cases where investment banks have genuinely screwed over clients to whom they owed fiduciary responsibilities (during ...

National Geographic Adventure Survival Guide '09 -- August/September 2009 (National Geographic)
**On Newsstands August 4, 2009** **Eight Black Swans** -- When the unexpected happens, it pays to be prepared. For an adventure-style "Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook," National Geographic Adventure came up with eight colossal disasters -- a tsunami hitting the Northwest; the West running dry; an avalanche striking inbounds; megafires burning hotter and longer in the backcountry; being trapped overseas by a pandemic; America's power grid crashing; getting caught in bandit cross fire; the GPS system winking out -- and asked the experts what to do to get out of harm's way. See how any one of these "black swans," low-probability, high-impact events, could happen, and how to survive. **Plus:** Adventure interviews John Hillcoat, director of "The Road," the end-of-days thriller due in theaters this fall, based on Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. **Page 56.** **One Rogue Wave** -- What started as a weekend fishing trip in ideal conditions quickly turned from bad to worse. Already clinging to an overturned boat, seven fishermen watched as the ocean rose up in a way no one could have predicted. For the next 18 hours, adrift in the Atlantic, the men waged a desperate battle against time, hypothermia and the ocean ...

This Valentine's Day, Cupid Aims for Hearts and Wallets (crm-daily)
Cupid wants your money, and he'll get more of it than ever this Valentine's Day. John Smith of Alexandria, Va., plans on dropping about $400 treating his wife to flowers, jewelry and dinner. And he isn't the only one splurging. Consumers are expected to spend more this Valentine's Day than in the past 10 years, making February's ode to Cupid second only to the Christmas season in consumer spending, according to a National Retail Federation survey of more than 8,000 people, conducted by consumer surveyor BIGinsight. Those celebrating Valentine's Day will spend an average of $126.03, up 8.5% from 2011 and the most since NRF began the survey 10 years ago. Total spending is expected to reach $17.6 billion. The ever-growing popularity of e-commerce is contributing to an increase in sales around holidays, says Megan Donadio, retail strategist at consulting firm Kurt Salmon, adding that the Web makes it easy to shell out for the discounts and daily deals consumers love. Mobile apps also are vying for a share of shoppers' hearts. The free Moonit app, which had 15,000 downloads in the past week, invites people to send requests to "flirt" or "friend" other users and ...

The Top 10 Steps You Must Take To Use Anger Effectively (Forbes)
There was rare, near-universal agreement among folks who care about such things, that Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina Republican primary because of how he tore-into moderator John King of CNN. Although Mr. Gingrich?s approval ratings have since dipped from the high point they reached after he gutted Mr. King like he was a salmon, beat him senseless, ripped-him-a-new- one, and proverbially ate his lunch, the former Speaker remains the overwhelming favorite of Republicans who are members of the group Mixed Marshall Arts Professionals of America (MMAPA).

Skimmer's Guide: All Business is Local (inc)
Marketing today is all about geography, as companies try to appeal to local tastes on a global scale, writes John A. Quelch. **The book:** All Business Is Local: Why Place Matters More Than Ever in a Global, Virtual World, by John A. Quelch and Katherine E. Jocz; Portfolio. **The big idea:** Remember when "location, location, location" referred exclusively to maximizing foot traffic? Marketing today is all about geography, as companies try to appeal to local tastes on a global scale. **The backstory:** For decades, Quelch--now dean of the China Europe International Business School--has contested economist Theodore Levitt's famous argument that technology and other factors were erasing national distinctions. **Where with all:** All Business Is Local explains how place plays a role in every kind of business decision. If you run a supermarket, the authors point out, you want to be on the side of the street used by the most homeward-bound commuters. If you have both a physical and a virtual presence, you want pricing in the latter that doesn't discourage visits to the former. **If you read nothing else:** Chapter One discusses the emotional resonance of place and consumers' willingness to associate specific locales with quality.
