UFA Grand Prize: Ilya Kovalchuk
Apple sold 1.7 million iPhones in the first 4 days. Super Bowl commercials increase in cost every single year. NHL attendance is on the upswing. Bad economy. What bad economy? Seems like everyone is spending money. What better way for a sports franchise to spend money than to acquire new talent. And as July 1st brings with it NBA and NHL free agency. The biggest name by far on the ice will be the former Thrasher (and hopefully former Devil), Ilya Kovalchuk. Where will the Russian sniper go? Here are the numbers: Career Statistics YEAR TEAM GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG SHG 2001-2002 ATL 65 29 22 51 -19 28 7 0 2002-2003 ATL 81 38 29 67 -24 57 9 0 2003-2004 ATL 81 41 46 87 -10 63 16 1 2005-2006 ATL 78 52 46 98 -6 68 27 0 2006-2007 ATL 82 42 34 76 -2 66 18 0 2007-2008 ATL 79 52 35 87 -12 52 16 2 2008-2009 ATL 79 43 48 91 -12 50 12 0 2009-2010 NJD 27 10 17 27 9 8 2 0 ATL 49 31 27 58 1 45 10 0 Career 621 338 304 642 -75 437 117 3 Hes been a Calder candidate, Rocket Richard Trophy winner, captain of the Thrashers, 3-time allstar, captain of Russias Olympic team, and most importantly, a fathead. Historically, centers are the top scorers in the NHL. Successful wingers are usually good because of the man in the middle. Very few wings put up big numbers on their own, because they are that damn good. And Kovy fits that category, he is that damn good Whoever the lucky team is that signs him, will be getting him for his prime years. Hes only 27, and shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. Hes lightning quick, has an accurate, powerful shot, and just ridiculously talented. Players like him rarely go on the free market, and hell be commanding top dollar. If Im Kovys agent, heres my sales pitch: Youre getting a guy that is feared every time hes on the ice. Hes young, and hes been lighting up teams with pretty much no help. Hes a one man wrecking crew that will sell jerseys and win games. Sign him, pay him, and win with him. Then again, he wont need much talk; hes got the numbers to back him up. New Jersey Devils Tickets Five In A Row Takes Devils Into Break
New Jersey Devils Tickets Five In A Row Takes Devils Into Break Brendan Shanahan may have brought it home in the last game before the break but it was a team effort that makes wins happen. Devils forward players getting ice time this season include David Clarkson, Patrik Elias, Brian Gionta, Robert Holik, Jamie Langenbrunner, John Madden, Jay Pandolfo, Zach Parise, Brian Rolston, Mike Rupp, Shanahan, Travis Zajac and Dainius Zubrus. Team defensemen getting ice time this season include Sheldon Brookbank, Andy Greene, Jay Leach, Paul Martin, Mike Mottau, John Oduya, Bryce Salvador and Colin White. Goalies for the team are Martin Brodeur, Scott Clemmensen and Kevin Weekes but Brodeur is currently on the injured reserves list. Hats go off to the coaches, staff and medical team; many of whom work behind the scenes doing what it takes to keep the players in good shape and on top of their game as best as possible. Coaches include head coach Brent Sutter, assistant coach John MacLean, assistant coach Tommy Albelin and goaltending coach Jacques Caron. The training staff is comprised of head trainer Richard Stinziano, equipment manager Rich Matthews, assistant equipment manager Alex Abasto, assistant equipment manager Matthew Mitchell, assistant equipment manager Mike Thibault, strength and conditioning coordinator Michael Vasalani, massage therapist Tommy Plasko, fitness consultant Vladimir Bure and exercise physiologist doctor Garret Caffrey. A team of special assignment coaches are also on hand and consist of Pat Burns, Jacques Laperriere, Larry Robinson, Scott Stevens and Chris Terreri. With a 5-2 win over the Canadiens, the Devils will finish out the month of January with two more games against the Bruins and Penguins, away and home respectively. In February, the Devils will travel and take to the ice as visitors in games against the Thrashers, Panthers, Lightning and Islanders. At home in February, they will host games against the Capitals, Kings, Rangers, Islanders, Bruins, Sharks, Avalanche and the Panthers. Games during the month of March will be a mixture of at home and away games. The travelling occasions for the Devils will include away games against the Maple Leafs, Islanders, Canadiens, Hurricanes, Bruins, Flyers, Blackhawks and the Rangers. On their own ice, hopefully the Devils will bring their best plays to host games against the Flyers, Flames, Coyotes, Blackhawks, Wild and the Hurricanes. In April, the Devils will hold two games at home against the Lightning and Maple Leafs. The rest of the games that complete the season will be away games for the Devils where they take on the Penguins, Sabres and Senators as visitors with the last game of the season being against the Senators or Saturday, April 11. With third place standings in the Eastern Conference at present, the Devils are in a good position with 29 wins, 15 losses and 3 OT but its not a time they can get comfortable, even with the 5-game winning streak theyve just experienced. Montreal and neighborhood peers New York Rangers are right on their heels with a competition where theres only one Stanley Cup. Do you want to experience the most exhilarating NHL action first hand? Flyers, Penguins, Capitals Rank Atop Toughest Competition in Eastern Conference This Season
Two years ago, the Bruins ran away with the top spot in the Eastern Conference, placing first with 116 points -- their highest point total since collecting 119 points en route to their last Stanley Cup in 1972. Last season, the Bruins struggled just to stay in playoff contention, but finished strong to earn the sixth seed with 91 points, 30 points behind first-place Washington. Both of those seasons ended with painful Game 7 losses in the second round, but the Bruins hope for a longer playoff run this spring. "Like I said, over the last two years we're one of five teams that have been in the second round [both years]," said Bruins general managerPeter Chiarelli. "So it's time to move on from the second round, right? I'm optimistic. We have to improve. So how do we improve? By going to the next round." So what are the chances of that? How does this year's Bruins squad stack up against the rest of the conference? Here's a team-by-team look at the Bruins' competition in the East in 2010-11. Atlanta ThrashersThe Thrashers should be improved with defensive guru - and former Bruins assistant -Craig Ramsayat the helm, along with an infusion of talent thanks to Chicago's cap purge, as Atlanta acquiredDustin Byfuglien,Andrew Ladd,Ben EagerandBrent Sopelfrom the Cup champs. They also upgraded in net by signingChris Masonand could contend for one of the final playoff spots, but shouldn't be a threat to the Bruins, who have won 10 straight against the Thrashers. Buffalo SabresThe Bruins got by Buffalo in the playoffs last year, but the defending division champion Sabres are still Boston's biggest threat in the Northeast. Any team with reigning Vezina winnerRyan Millerin goal will be a tough matchup, especially when they also have towering youngsterTyler Myers, the 6-foot-8, 219-pound Calder Trophy winner, on defense and firepower up front with the likes ofThomas Vanek,Derek Roy,Jason PominvilleandTim Connolly. Carolina HurricanesThe Hurricanes couldn't overcome a horrendous start last year, but could challenge for a playoff spot if they play like they did at the end of the year for the full season.Eric Staalis a legitimate star up front with support fromJussi JokinenandTuomu Ruutu, whileCam Wardis a proven playoff performer in goal. It's just a matter of actually making the postseason for the former Whalers, who have qualified for the playoffs just once since winning the Cup in 2006. They did reach the conference final in that lone appearance in 2009, upsetting the top-seeded Bruins along the way. Florida PanthersThere are changes aplenty in Miami this year, though the new Panthers aren't likely to make the impact of the additions the basketball team in town made this offseason. New GMDale Tallonhelped construct a Cup winner in Chicago, but he has less to work with here.David Boothcould be an elite player if he can stay healthy, whileStephen WeissandMichael Frolikare decent complementary parts, but the Panthers lack the depth to challenge the top teams in the East. GoalieTomas Vokounis good enough to put a scare into a few of those clubs, but don't expect it to be enough for the Panthers to end their 10-year playoff drought, the longest current streak in the NHL. Montreal CanadiensRegardless of the records, games between the Bruins and Habs always take on a special significance, and this year shouldn't be any different. The Canadiens squeaked into the playoffs as the eighth seed last year, then shocked both Washington and Pittsburgh to reach the conference final.Jaroslav Halakwas the main reason for that, but the Habs chose to stick withCarey Priceanyway, trading Halak to St. Louis. Price had a nightmare start to the preseason, and the folks along Rue Sainte-Catherine could rue that decision if he doesn't turn things around in the regular season. Price should at least get plenty of offensive support from forwardsMike Cammalleri,Scott Gomez,Tomas Plekanecand new captainBrian Gionta, whileAndrei Markovand exciting youngsterP.K. Subbanheadline the blue-line corps. New Jersey DevilsThe Devils will be top heavy this year, but will they still be a top team in the East? Re-signingIlya Kovalchukto go along withZach Parisegives New Jersey a frightening pair of snipers to fuel the offense, but Kovalchuk's 15-year, $100-million contract has put the Devils in salary cap hell. They are opening the season with the minimum 20 players, including just 11 forwards, on the roster. Kovalchuk may have to skate a double shift to earn that money. At the other end of the ice, heavy workloads are nothing new to goalieMartin Brodeur, and the NHL's all-time leader in wins and shutouts is one big reason to never take the Devils lightly, regardless of the cap hurdles GMLou Lamoriellostill has to clear. New York IslandersThings have been bleak for a long time on Long Island, where the glory days of the four Cups won early 1980s are a distant memory. The Isles haven't won a playoff series since 1993, and that isn't likely to change this year. The Islanders do have some exciting young players to watch inJohn TavaresandMatt Moulson, but they've already lost standout defensemanMark Streitand forwardKyle Okposofor long stretches with shoulder injuries, and can they really trust goalieRick DiPietroto stay healthy? New York RangersA shootout loss to the Flyers in the final game last year kept the Rangers out of the playoffs, but they have the talent to make some noise this year.Marian Gaborikis the key to the offense, and the Rangers added mammoth enforcerDerek Boogaardthis summer to help keep his former Wild teammate healthy.Marc Staalis an emerging star on defense, whileHenrik Lundqvistremains one of the top netminders in the league. The biggest question may be whetherJohn Tortorellacan get the most out of this lineup, or has the controversial and confrontational coach worn out his welcome on Broadway? Ottawa SenatorsThe good news is thatJason Spezzaremains in Ottawa after a summer filled with trade rumors, as does captainDaniel Alfredsson,Milan Michalek,Alex KovalevandMike Fisher, though the latter's heart may now be in Nashville with his new bride,Carrie Underwood. The Senators also addedSergei Goncharto bolster the defense, but a goalie tandem ofPasscal LeclaireandBrian Elliottcould be their Achilles heel. Philadelphia FlyersBruins fans won't like hearing this, but last year's playoff nemesis could be even better this year. The Flyers stumbled through an inconsistent regular season before finding their footing underPeter Laviolette, who led them to the Cup final. Laviolette had a full camp to put his system in place this year, andMike Richards,Jeff Carter,Daniel Briere,Claude GirouxandScott Hartnellare back up front, whileAndrej MeszarosandSean O'Donnellhave joinedChris Pronger,Kimmo Timonen,Matt CarleandBraydon Coburnon arguably the league's best defense. ButSimon Gagneis gone and the Flyers didn't upgrade their goaltending, withMichael Leighton, who's already injured, andBrian Boucherboth back.Pittsburgh PenguinsQuestions remain about the depth on the wings andJordan Staalis still struggling to return from the foot injury he suffered in the playoffs, but as long asSidney CrosbyandEvgeni Malkinare around, the road to the Cup will more than likely still go through Pittsburgh.Marc-Andre Fleurygive the Penguins quality goaltending, andMatt Cookegives everyone with a conscience a reason to root against them, but it won't be easy to get past Pittsburgh. Tampa Bay LightningNew GMSteve Yzermanhas embarked on an ambitious rebuilding project in Tampa. He's already got a dominant set of top-six forwards in place withSteven Stamkos,Vincent Lecavalier,Martin St. Louis,Simon Gagne,Steve DownieandRyan Malone. Despite the presence of emerging starVictor Hedman, the defense still needs work. The goaltending duo ofMike SmithandDan Ellisalso leaves some question marks, but the Lightning should be a team on the rise, though maybe a year or two away from being a real contender. Toronto Maple LeafsThe Bruins have reason to thank the Leafs for their miserable showing last year (Tyler Seguin) and reason to hope those struggles continue this year (Toronto's 2011 first-round pick). Toronto did improve by addingKris VersteegandColby Armstrongup front, but even with that pair added to the likes ofPhil KesselandTyler Bozak, the Leafs lack talent and depth at forward. Their defense is another story, as they held ontoTomas Kaberleand will have a full season with new captainDion Phaneuf, as well as veteran netminderJ-S Giguerearound for the whole year. That's enough to figure on some improvement, but not enough to hurt the value of that first-round pick too much. Washington CapitalsThe reigning conference champs rolled to the Presidents' Trophy last year, but couldn't make it out of the first round of the playoffs. The Caps didn't panic, retaining almost the same lineup, with the biggest addition being acquiring enforcerD.J. Kingto protect the club's stars. And this team does have plenty of stars, withAlex Ovechkin,Alexander Semin,Nicklas Backstrom,Brooks LaichandMike Knubleleading the way up front andMike Green,Tom Potiand youngster John Carlson the key players on defense. Washington will count on youngstersSemyon VarlamovandMichal Neuvirthin goal. Their inexperience, and the high-flying Caps' struggles to handle the tighter checking and more intense physical play of the playoffs, are the only questions facing the team that should again be atop the East standings -- at least for the regular season. On Thursday, we'll take a look at the Western Conference, and how the Bruins stack up against the best the West has to offer to see what could await Boston if it gets out of the East and has a shot to claim the franchise's first Cup since 1972.
